Kay Bojesen

Kay Bojesen birds that come in pairs

Two of Kay Bojesen's wooden bird designs are made as couples. The 9 cm Lovebirds stand beak to beak, and Liv & Lykke pairs one large and one small bird with matching beige heads. They are turned in FSC-certified oak or beech and finished by hand in natural or painted colours.

Made for two

The Lovebirds only have eyes for each other, which makes them a natural wedding or anniversary gift.

Together or apart

Liv & Lykke can stand side by side or be split up, one bird at home and one with a child who has moved out.

Natural or painted

Lovebirds come in untreated oak with smoked oak, or painted; Liv & Lykke come in painted beech in green or soft pink.

Small enough for anywhere

At around 9 to 11 cm tall they suit a windowsill, desk or bedside table.

Beak to beak

Beak to beak

The Lovebirds stand beak to beak, as if halfway through a conversation. The natural pair sets untreated oak against smoked oak, so one bird is pale and one is dark. Painted versions in black, or light green with rose, give the same couple a brighter look.

Liv & Lykke

Liv & Lykke

Liv means life and Lykke means happiness in Danish. One large and one small bird share the same beige heads and identical white beaks, a sign that they belong together whether they sit close or far apart. The small bird is the size of the birds on the Babies mobile.

From the songbird family

From the songbird family

Both pairs grow out of Kay Bojesen's songbirds, which he drew in the 1950s. They are turned in FSC-certified wood and finished by hand, and they sit comfortably next to the larger 15.5 cm songbirds on a shelf.

Materiali

Untreated oak and smoked oak

Unfinished wood builds a soft patina; wipe it with a dry cloth, as oil or soapy water will change the colour.

Painted beech

Keep painted birds out of direct sun, heat and damp rooms so the colours stay fresh.

FSC-certified wood

The wood comes from trees that are planted, grown and felled responsibly (FSC C140259).

Designer e marchio

Kay Bojesen

1886–1958

Kay Bojesen trained as a silversmith under Georg Jensen and qualified in 1910. He made his first wooden figure in 1922 and opened his shop and workshop in Copenhagen ten years later. He wanted toys to be simple, sturdy and good to hold, with lines that smile.

Uso in casa

How do I clean the birds?

Wipe them with a dry cloth, or a tightly wrung-out cloth for painted versions. Do not soak them or use cleaning products.

Can Liv & Lykke be separated?

Yes. The large and small bird stand on their own, so they can be displayed together or in two different places.

Do they match the 15.5 cm songbirds?

Yes. They use the same Kay Bojesen bird shape at a smaller size and work well grouped with the classic songbirds.

Where should they stand?

Anywhere out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or stoves, which can fade paint and dry out the wood.

Which pair suits a wedding?

The Lovebirds, standing beak to beak, are the classic couple; Liv & Lykke suits new parents and their child.
