PH Outdoor: Henningsen's three shades on the facade
Poul Henningsen's three-shade family numbers about 30 lights, three of them for outdoor use. The PH 3-2½ bollard and wall lamp bring his glare-free shades to paths and entrances. The copper PH 4½-3 wall lamp of 1966 came from his last decade of work.

Glare control outside
The shades fold light down onto the path or step, so guests are not dazzled at the door.
Matt white inside
Painted shade interiors diffuse the light comfortably.
Metals made for weather
Black powder-coated stainless steel, or untreated copper that weathers to verdigris.
Wall or bollard
Pair the wall lamp at the door with bollards along the path.

A scientific approach
Henningsen was the first to take a scientific approach to light, basing his shades on the logarithmic spiral. Even reflection through the shades controls both glare and shadow, as useful outdoors as in.

Stainless steel and glass
The PH 3-2½ lamps have spun stainless steel shades in black powder coat, with a form-pressed glass shade holder. The wall lamp lights a doorway, and the bollard comes 910 or 1260 mm tall for paths and terraces.

Copper that turns green
The PH 4½-3 wall lamp has heavy spun copper shades, left untreated and brushed. Outdoors it weathers to a green verdigris patina, and it may look uneven until the patina is complete.
Materiales
Spun stainless steel
Black powder-coated shades for the PH 3-2½; rinse off dirt and wipe dry.
Untreated spun copper
Used on the PH 4½-3; do not polish if you want the green patina to form.
Form-pressed glass
The shade holder of the PH 3-2½ lamps, set between the spun steel shades.

1894–1967
Henningsen was born in Copenhagen and studied at technical schools in Frederiksberg and Copenhagen, though he never graduated as an architect. He began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted his life. In 1926 he set out the three-shade system his lamps still follow.
En casa
Which bulb should I use?
All three take an E27 bulb: up to 20 W on the PH 3-2½ lamps and up to 100 W on the copper wall lamp. An outdoor-rated warm white LED works well.
Who should install them?
All are hardwired, so a certified electrician should install them. The bollard's ground anchor is ordered separately.
How weatherproof are they?
The PH 3-2½ wall lamp and bollard are rated IP44; the copper wall lamp is rated IP23, best under an eave or porch roof.
Will the copper change colour?
Yes. Untreated copper darkens and turns green over time. That process may start during storage or transport.
How do I clean them?
Switch off, then wipe the shades with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
