Cirque: Tivoli's spinning colours in a 2016 lamp
Swedish graphic designer Clara von Zweigbergk created Cirque for Louis Poulsen in 2016 after a trip to Tivoli in Copenhagen. Carousels and wheels of fortune spin so fast that their colours blur into bands. Cirque paints those bands onto a spun aluminium shade with a matt white inside.

Colour as form
Painted bands wrap the shade and make colour the whole idea.

The shape recalls the balloons, carousels and domes of Tivoli.
A trip to Tivoli
Von Zweigbergk took her idea from Tivoli's carousels, candyfloss stands and wheels of fortune. When an object spins fast, its colours merge into horizontal bands, and Cirque holds that moment still.
Bands of painted colour
The bands are painted onto the spun aluminium in one bright colourway and two calmer ones. Inside, a white surface turns the light soft and sends it downward, so the colour stays on the outside of the lamp.
Grouping and placing
The Ø 150 suits a row over a counter or a bedside. The Ø 220 lights a small table. The Ø 380 lights a dining table, and mixed sizes make a lively cluster in a stairwell or over a long table.

Von Zweigbergk is a Swedish graphic designer with her own studio in her native Stockholm. She studied at Beckmans School of Design and at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and spent four years at Lissoni Associati in Milan. She works with paper, colour, typography and products.

One E27 bulb. A warm LED of about 2700 K keeps the colours true.
How high should I hang it?
About 60–70 cm above a table. In a cluster, stagger the heights for a lively look.
