The PH system in its pure 3:2:1 form since 1926

The PH 3/3 shows Poul Henningsen's three-shade system in its original proportions. A top shade of about 30 cm sits over middle and lower shades in a 3:2:1 ratio. As a whole size it stays glare-free when hung higher in a room, in metal, opal glass or a mix of both.

Glare-free from below

A whole size, it is calculated so the bulb stays hidden even when the lamp hangs high.

Compact at 28.5 cm

At 28.5 cm across it fits small tables, stairwells, hallways and bedrooms.

Three material mixes

Choose black metal, white opal glass, or black metal with opal glass.

Warmer special editions

Pale rose, aged brass and the amber Centenary Edition bring warmer tones.

The 3:2:1 rule

The 3:2:1 rule

Each shade sits on a logarithmic spiral with the bulb at its focus. The top, middle and lower shades follow a 3:2:1 ratio, so light is caught and redirected before it reaches the room.

Whole size or hybrid

Whole size or hybrid

In Henningsen's naming, two equal numbers mean a whole size. The PH 3/3 is made to stay glare-free when hung higher, unlike hybrids such as the PH 3/2 that hang low over a table. That makes it a good fit for stairwells and halls.

Metal and glass

Metal and glass

Metal shades send all the light down and out, with soft-touch black outside. Opal glass shades glow as well as reflect. The mixed version pairs a metal top with glass below, so you get a little of both effects.

Matériaux

Painted aluminium

Soft-touch black outside and white inside for even, glare-free reflection.

Mouth-blown opal glass

Three layers, glossy outside and sandblasted inside; wipe with a damp cloth.

Brass on editions

Untreated brass darkens with time; aged brass is lacquered to keep its finish.

Designer et marque

Poul Henningsen

1894–1967

Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.

Au quotidien

Which bulb should I use?

One E27 bulb. A warm LED of about 2700 K suits the glass and brass versions.

How high should I hang it?

It works hung higher in a room, in a stairwell or hallway, and also over a small table.

PH 3/3 or PH 3/2?

The PH 3/3 is a whole size for higher hanging. The PH 3/2 is a hybrid made to hang low over a table.

Can I dim it?

Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.

How do I clean it?

Let it cool. Dust metal shades with a dry cloth and wipe glass with a lightly damp cloth.
