ヴェルナー・パントン（1926–1998）はコペンハーゲンの王立デンマーク美術アカデミーで建築を学び、キャリアの初期にはアルネ・ヤコブセンのスタジオで働いた後、1955年に独立しました。Moonは独立後最初期の照明作品のひとつで、後のキャリアを決定づける思考がすでに表れています。光源をひとつのシェードで覆い隠すのではなく、10枚の同心円状のリングを配置することで、電球が直接見えないまま、すべてのリングの間からやわらかな光がこぼれるようにしたのです。1960年に生産が始まったこのデザインは、パントンをデンマークデザイン界で最も独創的な存在として確立する一助となりました。その評価は、のちのパンテラ・ランプやパントンチェアによって不動のものとなります。現在Moonは、パントンのデザインをオリジナルに忠実に生産し続けるデンマークのメーカー、ヴェルパンが製造しています。

Panton's 1960 Moon: ten rings that shape light
Verner Panton designed the Moon in 1960, one of his earliest lamps. Ten ring-shaped lamellae fan around the bulb, reflecting and filtering the light into a soft, glare-free glow. The pendant looks different from every angle you see it.

Changes as you move
Seen from below, from the side or across the room, the rings form a different shape each time.
Metal or opal
The classic Moon is lacquered metal. Moon Opal uses translucent opal acrylic for a warmer, gentler glow.

An early Panton
When the Moon appeared in 1960, Panton was at the start of a career in which he would fill whole rooms with colour and light. The fan of rings already shows his interest in lamps that work as sculpture.
Ten rings, one light
Each of the ten lamellae is positioned to reflect and filter the light. It passes between the rings and bounces off their surfaces, so the room gets an even glow rather than a bright point.
Opal for a softer mood
Verpan relaunched the Moon with lamellae in translucent white opal acrylic. Light now shines through the rings as well as off them, giving a warm, gentle glow over a table or in a bedroom.

1926–1998
Panton trained as an architect and began in Arne Jacobsen's office before going his own way. He used colour, plastics and metal to shape whole interiors as well as single objects. VERPAN works with Verner Panton Design AG to reissue his lighting and furniture.

Which bulb does it take?
The metal Moon takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W. Moon Opal takes an E14 of up to 15 W (Ø34) or an E27 of up to 60 W (Ø44.5). Bulbs are not included.
How high should I hang it?
About 60–70 cm above a dining table. In a hallway, keep it well above head height.
Which size should I choose?
Ø34 cm suits small tables, bedrooms and hallways. Ø44.5 cm suits larger dining tables and living rooms.
How heavy is it?
The metal Moon weighs 4.5 kg (Ø34) or 8 kg (Ø44.5). Moon Opal weighs 1.9 kg or 2.8 kg.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool, then dust the rings with a soft, dry cloth or brush.
