クリスタルのように透明なアクリル製アウタースフィアの中に、3本のスチールチェーンで吊られた4枚の白いリフレクターを備えた装飾的なペンダントランプ。白の世界をさりげなく破る赤のアクセントは、真下から見上げたときにだけ現れます — まさにヴェルナー・パントンらしい仕掛けです。
ヴェルナー・パントン(1926–1998)は、デンマークデザイン史上もっとも独創的な存在のひとりです。デンマーク王立芸術アカデミーで建築を学び、キャリア初期にはアルネ・ヤコブセンのスタジオに在籍。その後、抑制の効いた北欧の主流から離れ、鮮烈な色彩、幾何学、まったく新しい素材の探求へと進みました。球体は生涯にわたる関心の対象で、1969年の名作 VP Globe に代表されるように、光源を透明なアクリルシェルの中に隠し、電球ではなく浮かぶリフレクターが光をかたちづくるという手法を確立しました。Panto ペンダントはこの代名詞的なアイデアを受け継ぎ、白いリフレクターがまぶしさのない柔らかな光を全方向に放ち、隠された赤のきらめきが見上げる人だけにご褒美をくれます。現在はパントンのデザインをオリジナルの図面に忠実に製造するため2003年に設立されたデンマークのブランド、VERPAN が生産しています。

Panton's 1977 clear sphere with a hidden red
Verner Panton designed the Panto pendant in 1977. A crystal-clear acrylic sphere holds four white reflectors on three steel chains. The white is broken only by a small splash of red, visible when you look up at the lamp from below.

A calmer side
Panton is known for saturated colour, but the Panto shows a restrained side. White reflectors inside clear acrylic make a lamp that is light in look while clearly his own, with one small flash of red kept for those who look up.
Reflectors on chains
Four lacquered aluminium reflectors hang on three steel chains inside the sphere. They shape the light and seem to float, while the clear top and bottom shells close the form. A lacquered metal canopy finishes the mount.
Where to hang it
Hang it over a dining table, in a hallway or in a stairwell. The Ø40 weighs 5 kg and suits standard rooms; the Ø50 weighs 10 kg for larger spaces. Both hang on a 400 cm white fabric cord.

Verner Panton
1926–1998
Panton trained as an architect in Copenhagen and worked in Arne Jacobsen's office in the early 1950s. He became known for colour, plastics and immersive interiors, and kept returning to spheres in his lighting. VERPAN reissues his designs with Verner Panton Design AG.

Which bulb does it take?
One E27 bulb of up to 60 W (E26 in the US).
How is it different from the VP Globe?
Both are clear acrylic spheres. The VP Globe has five reflectors with stronger colour; the Panto has four white reflectors with a red accent seen from below.
How high should I hang it?
About 60–70 cm above a dining table. In a hallway, keep it well above head height.
How heavy is it?
5 kg for the Ø40 and 10 kg for the Ø50.
How do I clean the acrylic?
Use a soft cloth with mild soapy water, then dry it. Avoid alcohol and abrasive cleaners.
