1969年にVP Globeを描いたとき、ヴェルナー・パントンがデザインしていたのはランプというより、むしろ小さな「環境」でした。トータルインテリアと、1960年代末の先驅的なインスタレーション「Visiona」で知られるこのデンマークのデザイナーは、照明は面を明るくするだけでなく、部屋全体のムードを形作るべきだと考えていました。VP Globeはその志を文字通り形にしたもの。透明なアクリル球の内部に細いスチールチェーンでリフレクターを吊ることで、光の仕組み全体が、部屋のどの席からでも眺められる浮遊するコンポジションになります。半世紀を経た今も、このデザインはパントンの意図のままに照明を生産し続けるデンマークのメーカー、Verpan(ヴェルパン)によって作られています。
オパールガラス・エディションでは、5枚のリフレクターが磨かれた金属ではなく乳白色のガラス製となり、ランプの表情が一変します。光はオパールガラスに反射するのではなく透過するため、一つひとつのエレメントが内側から灯るように輝きます — その姿はシャンデリアというより柔らかな月の集まりに近く、静謐で、まぶしさは皆無です。Ø50cmというゆとりあるスケールは、球体の中で輝くフォルムたちに呆吸する余白を与えます。大きめのダイニングテーブルや吹き抜けの階段、天井の高いリビングには、このサイズが適任です。外殻が透明なので、この大きなグローブでさえ驚くほど視覚的に軽やか — 重さのない存在感です。

Panton's 1969 globe of floating reflectors
Verner Panton designed the VP Globe in 1969. A clear acrylic sphere holds five internal reflectors on three steel chains, so they seem to float inside. Panton wanted a lamp that catches the eye and unites a room, whether it hangs alone or in a cluster.

Reflectors in the air
The clear shell makes the reflectors look weightless.
Light without glare
The curved reflectors bounce the light up and down, keeping the bare bulb out of view.

Polished aluminium with red and blue, opal glass, brass-plated, brushed aluminium with orange, or coloured glass.

Space-age sphere
In 1969 Panton was shaping whole interiors with acrylic, steel and moulded plastic. The VP Globe puts that thinking into one object: a transparent sphere with reflectors that hang inside it.
Five ways to glow
The classic polished aluminium reflectors carry red and blue accents. Opal glass reflectors let light shine through, brass-plated ones add a golden tone, and brushed aluminium with orange follows Panton's colour theories.
Where to hang it
Verpan suggests it above a dining table, in a hallway or long corridor, or as a sculptural element in a corner. The clear sphere keeps the space around it open, even at Ø50 cm, and works alone or in clusters.

Panton was a Danish designer and architect who began in Arne Jacobsen's office. He used bold colour and new materials to shape whole rooms, and the VP Globe is one of his best known lamps. VERPAN reissues his lighting and furniture with Verner Panton Design AG.

Which bulb does it take?
The Ø40 takes one E14 bulb and the Ø50 one E27 bulb, each up to 60 W.
How high should I hang it?
About 60–70 cm above a dining table. In a hallway, keep the bottom of the sphere well above head height.
Which size should I choose?
Ø40 cm fits most tables and hallways. Ø50 cm suits large rooms and high ceilings.
How heavy is it?
About 5 kg for the Ø40 and 9 kg for the Ø50. It hangs on a 400 cm fabric cord.
How do I clean the acrylic?
Use a soft cloth with mild soapy water, then dry it. Avoid alcohol and abrasive cleaners to keep the acrylic clear.
