Eight shades from Henningsen's great year, 1958
Poul Henningsen designed the PH Snowball in 1958, the same year as the PH 5 and the PH Artichoke. It stood in their shadow until Louis Poulsen revived it in 1983. Eight stacked shades, glossy on top and matt underneath, turn the light into a soft, glare-free sphere.

Glare-free from all sides

The overlooked sibling
1958 brought the PH 5 and the PH Artichoke, which overshadowed the Snowball at first. Louis Poulsen revived it in 1983, and since then it has held its place as a classic of Danish lighting.
Glossy and matt
Each of the eight shades is glossy on top and matt below. Light bounces off the glossy surfaces from layer to layer, and the matt undersides send it out softly, so the whole lamp reads as a lit sphere.
Where to hang it
Over a dining table it gives a calm pool of light and a soft glow around it. In a stairwell or entrance it works well as a centre light, seen from below, from the side and from the landing above.

1894–1967
Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
