AJ Oxford: Jacobsen's lamp for St Catherine's College
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Oxford for the dining hall of St Catherine's College, Oxford, his modernist college completed in the early 1960s. It began as a pin-mounted table lamp for the hall's long oak tables. Three layers of opal glass send light downward.

- 220 mmOpal glass shade diameter
- 3Layers of mouth-blown glass
A clean graphic form
A slim stem, a round base and a simple shade, in black and white opal.
With or without top
With the metal top, light goes down; without it, the glass gives a soft halo all round.
Two heights to choose
The 410 mm suits a desk or dining table; the 280 mm fits shelves and windowsills.
Small brass details
The union nut and finger screw are untreated brass with fine clockwise hairlines.

Made for a dining hall
Jacobsen designed the college in a modernist style that stood apart from classical Oxford. In the dining hall, long oak tables seat 350 people, and the lamp was first made as a pin-mounted lamp to light them.

Still in use
The college still uses the building for teaching and student housing. In the hall, clerestory windows bring in daylight, and wall-mounted AJ Eklipta lamps give diffused general light around the tables.

Soft halo or focused light
Three layers of mouth-blown opal glass send light downward. Leave off the metal top shade, and the milky glass creates a soft halo around the lamp; keep it on for a more graphic, focused look on a desk.
Materialen
Three-layer opal glass
Mouth-blown white glass; wipe it with a soft, damp cloth when cool.
Black painted steel
Used for the stem and the optional top shade.
Untreated brass
The union nut and finger screw develop a patina over time.

Where is the switch?
On the socket housing, with a 2.2 m black textile cord and plug.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool, dust the steel with a dry cloth and wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth.
