PH 4½-3½: a 45 cm glass shade, in this form since 1990
The PH 4½-3½ pairs Poul Henningsen's 45 cm top shade with the lower shades of the 3½ model, a hybrid he devised so lamps could sit lower. The glass table lamp took its current form in 1990. All shades are mouth-blown, three-layer opal glass.

Large, glare-free shades
The shade sizes hide the bulb completely and spread its light down and out over a wide area.
Mouth-blown opal glass
Three layers of glass, sandblasted inside, make the whole lamp glow softly.
A purple anti-glare ring
A small ring in spun aluminium in purple controls the last trace of direct light.
Frame in chrome-plated brass
High-lustre chrome-plated spun brass and steel frame the white glass.

A hybrid of sizes
Henningsen's model numbers give the shade sizes. This lamp joins a 45 cm top shade to the lower shades of the 3½ model, a hybrid first made so pendants could hang lower, here set on a table base or a floor stand.

The logarithmic spiral
He based the shades on the logarithmic spiral, which spreads light evenly across each shade. Most of the light is directed downward, and the opal glass softens it, so shadows stay gentle and the bulb never meets the eye.

Heat and breath
Each shade is blown by mouth and heated to over 1,400°C. Small variations in thickness and texture are normal and show that each piece is made by hand. The glass is glossy outside and sandblasted inside.
Materialen
Three-layer opal glass
Mouth-blown with a sandblasted inside; wash it gently in lukewarm water and dry it well.
Chrome-plated spun brass
Used for the top plate and base, with a high-lustre finish.
Spun aluminium ring
The purple anti-glare ring sits inside the shades and reduces glare.

1894–1967
Henningsen was born in Copenhagen and studied at technical schools in Frederiksberg and Copenhagen, though he never graduated as an architect. He began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted his life. In 1926 he set out the three-shade system his lamps still follow.
Thuis gebruiken
Which bulb should I use?
One E27 bulb of up to 100 W. An E27 LED at 2700 K gives warm, even light.
Table or floor lamp?
The table lamp is 56 cm tall for a sideboard or large desk. The floor lamp is 126 cm tall for beside a sofa or reading chair.
How heavy is it?
Both versions are heavy because of the glass and brass, so place them on a stable surface before fitting the shades.
How is it switched?
The table lamp has a switch in the base; the floor lamp has a switch on its 3.3 m cord.
How do I clean the glass?
Let it cool, then wipe the shades gently with a soft, damp cloth and dry them.
