De PH 4/3 tafellamp verscheen in 1966, een van de laatste ontwerpen uit Poul Henningsens leven, en vergroot zijn drie-kappensysteem uit 1926 met een bovenkap van 40 cm boven 3/3 onderkappen in wit gelakt aluminium op een verchroomde stam. Het principe is eenvoudig te benoemen en moeilijk te verbeteren: elke kap ligt op een logaritmische spiraal met de lichtbron in het brandpunt, zodat het licht de hele welving onder een constante hoek raakt en naar beneden valt zonder de bron ooit prijs te geven.
Dit is de grote tafellamp van de PH-serie – in aanwezigheid bijna een kleine vloerlamp – op maat voor royale bijzettafels, dressoirs en bureaus, waar de witte kapbinnenzijden aangenaam werklicht geven en tegelijk vriendelijk blijven voor de ogen. One of Henningsen's last lamps, from 1966
Louis Poulsen launched the PH 4/3 in 1966, one of the last designs of Poul Henningsen's life. It simplifies a PH light from 1929 that won top honours at the Barcelona world exhibition into a clean, all-metal form. A 40 cm top shade sits over 3/3 lower shades in white lacquered aluminium.

Light and simple

A late distillation
In 1929 Henningsen's lighting won top honours at the Barcelona world exhibition. Nearly four decades later he reduced that idea to the PH 4/3, launched in 1966, the year before his death.
The spiral at work
Each shade sits on a logarithmic spiral with the bulb at its centre. Light strikes the whole curve at a constant angle and is reflected down and out, so the source stays hidden from anyone at the table.

Poul Henningsen
1894–1967
Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
