IP20, binnen.

Louis Poulsen
VL 38: Lauritzen's late-1930s lamp for Radiohuset
Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL 38 in the late 1930s for Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen. It appeared in Louis Poulsen catalogues from the mid-1940s. Relaunched in 2016 with LED, it has a small tilting shade on a curved brass stem.

Soft and organic
Lauritzen favoured rounded, curving forms, and the VL 38 shows it in its shade and stem.
Light you can adjust
Tilt the shade to change where the light falls; its white inside keeps the light soft.
Two light levels
Switch between 50% and 100%, and set a timer to switch off after 4 or 8 hours.
Brass that ages
The untreated brushed brass stem develops a patina over time.

Made for a broadcast house
Radiohuset, now home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music, was designed by Lauritzen as one total work. The VL 38 was among the lamps he developed with Louis Poulsen for it, alongside the Studio and Radiohus pendant.

Back in production
After years out of production, the white and brass version returned in autumn 2016 with an integrated LED. A black edition followed in autumn 2017 with a bolder outline, keeping the soft, curvy expression of the original.

Table, floor and wall
The 38 cm table lamp suits a desk or bedside, and the 120 cm floor lamp a reading chair. The wall lamp works beside a bed when you want the table clear. All three share the tilting shade and curved brass.
Materialen
Untreated brushed brass
Used for the stem or arm; it is not lacquered and darkens gently with use.
Powder-coated aluminium
Shade and base in white or black; wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
Integrated LED
A 2700 K LED with an external driver on a plug, so there is no bulb to change.

Thuis gebruiken
Does it need a bulb?
No. The LED is built in, with an external driver that plugs into the socket.
Can I dim it?
It has two fixed light levels, 50% and 100%, and you can set one level to apply each time it is powered on.
What does the timer do?
It can switch the lamp off automatically after 4 or 8 hours, or you can turn the timer off.
Where should I place it?
The table lamp suits a desk or bedside, the floor lamp a reading chair, the wall lamp beside a bed or sofa.
How do I care for the brass?
Dust it with a soft, dry cloth. It will darken over time; polish it with brass cleaner if you want the shine back.
