Pond Mirror Sizes: Small, Large, XL and Full Size Compared

ferm LIVING draws the Pond Mirror as an irregular, water-like outline held in a slim metal frame, and then offers that same idea at several very different scales. This guide compares the Small, Large, XL and Full Size versions side by side, explains how the outline changes as the mirror grows, and suggests which one belongs in a hallway, a bathroom or a bedroom, including what each one asks of your wall.

One outline, four proportions

Every Pond Mirror is built the same way: mirror glass on an MDF backing, edged with a brass plated zinc frame and finished in either Brass or Dark Chrome. What changes from size to size is not the material but the proportion, and with an organic shape that matters more than it would with a rectangle. A curve that reads as a gentle ripple across half a metre becomes a broad, slow sweep at nearly a metre wide, and turns into something closer to a standing pool of water when it is stretched to 165 cm tall.

The Pond Mirror Small and the Pond Mirror Large are both made from two individually shaped mirrors set within the frame, so you see the seam between two pools of glass rather than one continuous surface. The Pond Mirror XL takes that silhouette and pushes it into an oversized wall piece with curved edges. The Pond Mirror Full Size draws the outline out into a narrow vertical form meant for a complete, full-body reflection. Because the frames are welded, small marks are visible where the metal has been fused: one on the Small, two on the XL. They are part of how the piece is made, not a flaw.

There is also a Medium version in rattan, at 40 x 72 x 5.5 cm and 5.4 kg. Its deeper profile gives it a softer, more textural presence than the metal framed versions, which all sit within 1.5 to 1.6 cm of the wall.

The four sizes compared

Width x height x depth 52 x 50 x 1.5 cm 64 x 110 x 1.5 cm 87 x 94 x 1.5 cm 40 x 165 x 1.6 cm

Materials Mirror glass, MDF backing, brass plated zinc frame
Finishes Brass or Dark Chrome
Best for Bathroom basin, small hallway, above a dresser Hallway, bathroom with a wider wall Living room or entrance as a focal piece Bedroom, dressing area, hallway

Read the table by shape as much as by size. The Small is almost as wide as it is tall, the Large is roughly twice as tall as it is wide, the XL is close to square but much bigger, and the Full Size is a tall, slender strip. Those ratios decide where each one will feel at home.

Hallway: first impressions and a last look

A hallway mirror does two jobs. It gives you a quick check before you leave, and it opens up a narrow space by reflecting light from a door or window. The Pond Mirror Large handles both well. At 110 cm tall and 64 cm wide, it shows most of your upper body from a normal standing distance, yet it is narrow enough for a corridor wall where a console or coat hooks also need room. Turned on its side, it gives a wider view instead.

In a very tight entrance, the Pond Mirror Small works above a slim shelf or key tray, where you only need to see your face. If the hallway is long and you want a head to toe check by the front door, the Pond Mirror Full Size is the one to consider, provided the wall is clear of radiators and door swings for its full 165 cm.

Bathroom: scale to the basin

All four versions are listed for bathroom use, but proportion decides which fits. Above a single basin, the Pond Mirror Small is the natural choice: at 52 cm wide it sits comfortably over most standard basins without crowding a wall light or cabinet beside it.

For a double vanity or a wide, uninterrupted wall, the Pond Mirror Large turned in its wider orientation, or the XL, gives a more generous reflection. In a bathroom it is sensible to keep the mirror out of the direct splash zone of a shower and to make sure the room is well ventilated, since the backing is MDF. A wipe with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth is enough for the glass; avoid letting water collect along the lower edge of the frame.

Bedroom and living room: full length or a focal point

In a bedroom, the question is usually whether you want a full-length view. The Pond Mirror Full Size answers it directly: 40 cm wide and 165 cm tall, it fits between a wardrobe and a window, or beside a door, where a wider mirror would not. Its organic edge keeps it from looking like a utilitarian dressing mirror, so it can share a wall with artwork or shelving without feeling out of place.

The Pond Mirror XL plays a different role. At 87 x 94 cm it is less about checking an outfit and more about the wall itself: above a sideboard, at the end of a corridor, or over a bed with a low headboard, where its broad shape bounces light back into the room. Because it can be hung in any direction, you can rotate the outline until the heavier curve sits where the wall feels emptiest.

Fixing weight and hanging the mirror

Weight rises quickly with size, and it is the factor most people overlook. The Small is a manageable 3.5 kg, which most walls carry easily with the right plugs. The Large at 9.5 kg, the Full Size at 10.4 kg and the XL at 11.5 kg are a different matter, and deserve fixings chosen for your wall type rather than whatever is in the drawer.

  • Solid masonry or concrete: use wall plugs and screws suited to the material, drilled to the correct depth.
  • Plasterboard: for the Large, XL and Full Size, fix into a timber or metal stud where possible, or use cavity fixings rated well above the mirror's weight.
  • Tiles in a bathroom: drill through the grout or use a tile bit at low speed, and seal around the plugs.

L-shaped wall-mounting screws are included, and the bracket spacing is narrow on the Small (14 cm) and Full Size (16 cm), wider on the XL (44 cm). A narrow spacing makes it easier to land both fixings on a single stud, which helps on plasterboard. With the XL, mark both points with a spirit level before drilling, and have a second person hold the mirror while you hang it.

Which Pond Mirror to choose

Choose the Small for a basin or a compact entrance, the Large for a hallway or bathroom where you want a taller reflection, the XL when the mirror should be the main feature on the wall, and the Full Size for a bedroom or dressing area where a head to toe view matters. Pick Brass for warmth against white or natural walls, Dark Chrome for a cooler, graphic outline against darker colours.
