AJ Eklipta: a 1956 glowing circle by Jacobsen
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Eklipta in 1956 for Rødovre Town Hall, in Ø350 and Ø450, to light its stairways indoors and its outside walls. A Ø220 size followed for St Catherine's College, Oxford. A clear glass edge throws a soft halo onto the wall.

Pure geometry on walls
A disc of light on the wall, with no visible fixings to break the shape.
A halo at the edge
The transparent rim of the glass makes a decorative ring of light around the lamp.
Indoors and out
Since Rødovre it has lit both stairways and facades; the larger E27 wall versions are rated IP44.

Three layers of mouth-blown opal glass spread the light without bright spots.
Rødovre Town Hall
Jacobsen first made the lamp in two sizes, Ø350 and Ø450, for Rødovre Town Hall, where it lit the stairways inside and the walls outside. He preferred the largest size for his own stairways.
On to Oxford
A smaller Ø220 version came later for St Catherine's College in Oxford, where it gives diffused general light in the dining hall. Today the lamp is used in buildings around the world, indoors and out.
The eclipse effect
Where the glass meets the wall, its clear edge lets light escape sideways. The result is a soft halo, like an eclipse, that frames the glowing white disc and gives the lamp its name.

Mouth-blown opal glass
Three layers with a transparent edge; wipe it with a damp cloth when cool.
White aluminium housing
Die-cast or spun aluminium with white powder coat, hidden behind the glass.
E27, G9 or LED
Ø220 uses G9; Ø350 and Ø450 come with E27 or built-in LED at 2700 K or 3000 K.

1902–1971
Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen and graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1927. He worked for the City Architect of Copenhagen, then opened his own office two years later. For the SAS Royal Hotel he designed the building, its Swan and Egg chairs and its lamps.

Which size should I choose?
Ø220 for a bathroom, hallway or bedside, Ø350 for stairways and entrances, Ø450 for large walls and facades.
Can it be used outdoors?
Choose the AJ Eklipta Outdoor Wall Lamp, rated IP44, for facades. The Ø220 is rated IP20 and is meant for indoors.
Can I dim it?
The Ø220 works with leading-edge dimmers and a dimmable bulb. LED versions in larger sizes use DALI.
Who should install it?
It is hardwired to the wall, so a certified electrician should fit it.
How do I clean the glass?
Switch off and let it cool, then wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth and dry it.
