Jacobsen's 1957 pendant for the SAS Royal Hotel
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Royal in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which opened in 1960. First called the AJ Pendant, it hung above tables in the hotel's snack bar, lounge and 21st-floor Panorama Lounge. Its round, segmented form gives light down and a soft glow up.

A hotel as one work
For the SAS Royal Hotel, Jacobsen designed the building and much of what was inside it, from furniture to everyday items. The pendant was part of that total concept, alongside the Egg and Swan chairs.
The circle, segmented
Where other AJ lamps are angular, the Royal is a shallow, segmented dome. It marked Jacobsen's early turn toward the basic geometric forms of his later work, and it suits round and square tables alike.
Then and now
The hotel's original pendants were copper, and early colours were light grey, dark brown and black. Today it comes in black and white with a built-in LED, and a smaller size joined in 2020 for the hotel's 60th anniversary.

Jacobsen was a Danish architect and designer whose career spanned about 60 years. He worked in total works of art, joining architecture and interiors. His furniture drew on nature, as in the Egg and Swan chairs, while his buildings were strict and functionalist.
