Grand Cru Grinders: H14.5, H20.5 or Nouveau Smoke H17 cm

Rosendahl makes its Grand Cru grinder in three versions that look alike from across the room: a short clear mill at 14.5 cm, a tall clear mill at 20.5 cm and a smoked glass Nouveau mill at 17 cm. This guide sets out what actually separates them, from capacity and glass colour to care, so you can decide which one belongs by the stove and which one belongs on the table.

One grinding principle, three bodies

All three mills share the same idea. Spices are kept whole in a glass body and only ground when you need them, which keeps their taste and aroma for longer than ready ground pepper sitting in a jar. The grinding mechanism is ceramic and made by CrushGrind, a Danish specialist in grinding mechanisms. The grind is adjustable from fine to coarse, and the action works on the same principle as a pestle, crushing the flavour out of the peppercorn or salt crystal rather than shaving it.

On the clear Grand Cru mills the ceramic grinder sits at the top of the mill rather than underneath. Turn the mill upside down to grind, set it back on its base and no stray grains fall onto the tablecloth or worktop. It is a small detail, but it is the reason these mills can stand on a linen cloth through a whole dinner without leaving a ring of pepper behind.

Where the three differ is in size, glass and finish. The two classic mills are made from lead-free glass with a top in PP and stainless steel, black with a brushed steel band. The Nouveau uses machine blown smoked glass, a black plastic top and patinated steel, and replaces the familiar Grand Cru grooves with a much finer rhythm.

Grand Cru grinder H14.5 and H20.5: same diameter, double the capacity

The two classic mills are built from the same parts and share the same 7 cm diameter, so in the hand they feel identical. The difference is height, and with it capacity. The GC Grinder H14.5 cm black/steel holds 0.12 L and weighs 0.4 kg. The GC Grinder H20.5 cm black/steel holds 0.25 L, a little over twice as much, and weighs 0.45 kg.

That extra six centimetres changes how each mill is best used. The H20.5 is the one to fill and forget. Rosendahl describes it as a size that does not need frequent refilling, which matters most for the spice you reach for at every meal, usually black pepper. It stands well beside the hob, where you grind with one hand while stirring with the other, and its height keeps it visible on a crowded counter.

The H14.5 suits the table better. At 14.5 cm it sits below the rim of most wine glasses and does not interrupt the view across a set table. Its smaller capacity is an advantage for coarse sea salt, pink peppercorns or a spice blend that you use less often and would rather refill fresh. Two of them, one for salt and one for pepper, make a neat matched pair.

Both share the four broad vertical grooves that run through the whole Grand Cru range, from the storage jars to the glassware. The grooves give a sure grip and catch the light along the glass, and they make the grinders sit comfortably next to other Grand Cru pieces on a shelf.

The taller H20.5 cm mill holds 0.25 L, enough for daily pepper by the stove.

Grand Cru Nouveau H17: smoked glass and 50 grooves

The GC Nouveau Grinder H17 cm smoke is a reinterpretation rather than a resize. Where the classic mills have four grooves, the Nouveau has 50. The fine, repeating ribs give the glass a vivid surface and, as light passes through the dark grey smoked glass, a shifting play of colour. They are also practical: the dense ribbing gives a steady grip for large and small hands, even with oily fingers.

At 17 cm it sits between its two clear siblings in height, and at 7.5 cm across it is slightly wider. It is also the lightest of the three at 0.28 kg. Rosendahl does not state a capacity for the Nouveau, so if you need to compare fill volume precisely, the clear mills are the ones with published figures.

The smoked glass changes the character of the object. A clear mill shows its contents, which is part of the pleasure with colourful peppercorns or flaked salt. The Nouveau hides them in soft shadow, so it reads more as a sculptural piece on the table, closer to the smoked glassware in the Grand Cru Nouveau series. If your table already carries smoked glassware, the grinder joins it naturally. Our piece on Grand Cru vs Grand Cru Nouveau glassware covers that choice in more detail.

Care and practical choices

Care is where the Nouveau asks a little more of you. On both clear mills the glass body can go in the dishwasher at a maximum of 55°C once you have removed the top, which should never go in the machine. The Nouveau should not go in the dishwasher at all: wipe it with a damp cloth and wash the glass by hand. For a mill that lives by the hob and picks up grease, the clear versions are simply easier to keep looking clean.

A few combinations work particularly well. For a kitchen that cooks every day, an H20.5 for pepper by the stove and an H14.5 for salt at the table cover both jobs with one consistent look. For a dining table that leans dark and moody, a pair of Nouveau mills sits better with smoked glassware and candlelight. And if you want salt and pepper to be told apart at a glance, put pepper in the smoked Nouveau and salt in a clear H14.5, where the white crystals show through.

To complete the set, the GC Oil and vinegar bottle H18.5 cm black/steel is built from the same lead-free glass, PP and stainless steel, with a silicone seal. It stands 18.5 cm tall and 7 cm wide, holding 0.25 L, so it lines up neatly between the two clear grinders. The pourer has a return flow in the stopper so oil does not run down the outside of the bottle.
