Percale Fitted Sheets With or Without Elastic: Which to Choose

Juna makes its white Percale fitted sheets in two constructions: one with elastic running all the way round a deep 30 cm corner, and one without elastic, cut with only a little height. They look almost identical folded on a shelf, but they are made for different mattresses. This guide explains which one belongs on your bed, and where a flat sheet fits into the picture.

Start with the mattress, not the sheet

The single measurement that decides the choice is mattress height. Measure from the top surface to the bottom edge at a corner, with any topper removed, and write it down next to the width and length.

A Scandinavian bed is often built in two layers: a spring or box spring mattress underneath, and a thin top mattress (a topper) lying on it. The two Juna sheets are designed for those two layers. The elastic version wraps the deep lower mattress; the version without elastic dresses the slim top mattress. Read that way, the question is less "which is better" and more "which layer am I covering".

  • Mattress up to approx. 26 cm deep: the fitted sheet with elastic.
  • Top mattress between 4–8 cm high: the fitted sheet without elastic.
  • Any mattress, any depth, or a bed you like made the traditional way: a flat sheet.

The fitted sheet with elastic: a deep, gripping corner

The Percale Fitted sheet w/elastic 160x30x200 cm white is the sheet Juna calls a box sheet. The sheet itself has a height of 30 cm, and the elastic is sewn all the way round the edge rather than only at the corners. That continuous elastic is what keeps the hem pulled underneath the mattress on all four sides, so the surface stays flat and the corners do not creep upwards during the night.

Juna states that it works on both spring mattresses and box spring mattresses up to a height of approx. 26 cm. The extra few centimetres of fabric beyond that are what tuck under the base; on a deeper mattress the elastic would sit on the side instead of beneath it, and the fit would loosen.

In the 160x30x200 cm size the sheet weighs 0.84 kg, noticeably more than the version without elastic, simply because of the deep sides. For a larger bed there is the Percale Fitted sheet w/elastic 180x30x210 cm white, woven from organic cotton and weighing 0.95 kg. Both are machine washable at 60°C.

The fitted sheet without elastic: made for the top mattress

The Percale Fitted sheet w/o elastic 160x200 cm white is what Danes call an envelope sheet (kuvertlagen). Instead of elastic it has a shallow, tailored edge with just enough height to fold over a top mattress, and Juna cuts it to fit top mattresses between 4–8 cm high. Because a topper is thin and light, it does not need elastic to stay put: the fabric sits snugly round the edges and the weight of the sleeper does the rest, leaving the sheet tight and smooth.

The practical argument for it is laundry. On a bed with a box spring mattress and a topper, you put the envelope sheet on the topper and an elastic sheet on the mattress below. Only the top sheet touches you, so that is the one you wash each week, while the lower sheet can stay on a little longer. Fewer large pieces in the machine is easier on water and energy, and on the person changing the bed.

The 160x200 cm size weighs 0.7 kg. The range runs from 90x200 cm for a single bed up to 180x210 cm, which covers both standard Danish widths and the longer 210 cm length. If you are unsure which bed sizes apply in your home, our guide to Danish vs Swedish bed sizes explains the difference.

Side by side

Fitted sheet with elastic Fitted sheet without elastic
Fit Elastic all the way round the edge; hem pulls under the mattress No elastic; shallow edge folds snugly over a topper
Mattress depth Spring or box spring mattresses up to approx. 26 cm Top mattresses 4–8 cm high
Sheet height 30 cm A little height, sized for a topper
Sizes For example 160x30x200 cm (0.84 kg) and 180x30x210 cm (0.95 kg) 90x200 up to 180x210 cm; 160x200 cm weighs 0.7 kg
Ease of making the bed Stretch over four corners; holds itself in place Lay over the topper and smooth; quick to change weekly
Best for The lower mattress, or a single deep mattress used alone The top mattress on a two-layer bed

Many households end up with both: an elastic sheet that stays on the base for weeks, and two or three envelope sheets in rotation on the topper.

Where a flat sheet fits in

A flat sheet has no shaping at all, which is exactly why it works on every type of mattress. Juna makes its white percale flat sheets in 150x250 cm and 240x260 cm, with many sizes in organic cotton. You can fold it down round the mattress and tuck it in, or let it hang loosely over the sides.

Tucking a flat sheet well takes a minute longer than stretching on a fitted one. Centre the sheet, tuck the head and foot ends first, then fold each corner into a neat diagonal (the hospital corner) before tucking the long sides. The reward is a perfectly taut surface and a bed that looks made with intent. The Percale Flat sheet 240x260 cm white, in organic cotton and weighing 0.9 kg, has enough width to tuck generously under a double bed.

Why percale feels crisp and matt

All three sheets share the same cloth. Percale is a plain weave, the simplest construction in weaving: each weft yarn passes over one warp yarn and under the next, giving the tightest possible interlacing. Woven from fine cotton yarns, as Juna's are, that grid produces a surface that feels cool and crisp against the skin and reads matt rather than shiny. Sateen, by contrast, floats its yarns over several others, which gives it a sheen and a softer, heavier drape.

Juna describes the canvas weaving as nice to lie on, smooth and durable. Percale also softens gently with washing while keeping its fresh hand, and it breathes well, which suits anyone who sleeps warm. Every Juna sheet is Oeko-Tex certified, the label that checks textiles for substances harmful to health, and all of them can go in the machine at 60°C.

The choice, then, is mostly arithmetic: measure the mattress, count the layers, and pick the sheet built for that depth. Pair the result with duvet covers and pillowcases in the full Bedding collection.
