A console or sideboard is usually shallow, often around 35 cm deep, and that single figure decides which table lamp will sit comfortably on it and which will hang over the edge. This guide measures four Slamp designs against that depth and explains how to group lamps of different heights so the surface looks composed rather than crowded.
Start with depth, not height
Most people choose a sideboard lamp by eye, judging height and silhouette. On a narrow console the footprint matters more. A lamp needs a margin at the back so it does not press against the wall and a margin at the front so a passing hip or bag does not catch it. On a 35 cm deep top, anything with a base or shade wider than about 30 cm starts to use the whole depth.
Slamp, founded in Rome in 1994 by Roberto Ziliani, is a useful brand to plan with because its table lamps vary so much in shape. Some are slim and flat, some are compact and faceted, and some carry a wide sculptural diffuser. The four below cover that range, and their published dimensions make the arithmetic simple.
| Design | Footprint | Height | Net weight | Designer | On a 35 cm console |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idea Table | 15 x 5 cm | 45.5 cm | 1 kg | Marcantonio | Uses only 5 cm of depth; lean it close to the wall |
| Diamond Table Small | 17 x 17 cm | 45 cm | 0.5 kg | Paolucci Statera | Leaves about 18 cm free; easy anywhere |
| Fiorellina Table | Ø 33 cm | 34 cm | 1 kg | Nigel Coates | Fits with about 1 cm to spare at each side |
| Accordeón Table | 37 x 37 cm (base Ø 16 cm) | 48 cm | 2.6 kg | Marc Sadler | Base fits; the diffuser is 2 cm wider than the top |
The slim options: Idea and Diamond
The Idea Table by Marcantonio is the most console-friendly shape in the group. It measures 15 x 5 x h. 45,5 cm, so it occupies a strip barely deeper than a hardback book. The design is a sculpted bulb on a brass-finish screw base, mounted against a flat backing in brushed brass, mirror or white matte, with an integrated LED behind it. Because the back is flat and self-contained, it is meant to stand close to a wall, which is exactly where a console lamp lives. The mirrored backing is worth considering in a hallway: it doubles the bulb and reflects a slice of the room, adding light and a little apparent depth to a tight space.

The Diamond Table Small, designed by Paolucci Statera, is square in plan at 17 x 17 cm and stands 45 cm high. Its faceted Opalflex® body takes its cue from Constantin Brancusi, whose reduced, polished forms reshaped modern sculpture, and it catches light differently from every angle. At a net 0.5 kg it is the lightest lamp here, which also means it is the easiest to move when you rearrange the top. On a 35 cm console it leaves around 18 cm of clear surface, enough for a tray of keys or a small stack of books in front of it.

The fuller shapes: Fiorellina and Accordeón
The Fiorellina Table is the work of Nigel Coates, the British architect and designer known for the narrative, theatrical interiors he championed from the 1980s onwards. It is round, Ø 33 x h. 34 cm, with reflective Opalflex® petals arranged like a blossom around the light source. On a 35 cm top it fits, but only just: centred, it leaves about a centimetre at front and back. That is acceptable on a sideboard in a dining room, where nobody brushes past, and less ideal on a hallway console beside the front door. Its low, wide profile reads as a bouquet rather than a column, so it works well at the end of a long sideboard where a vase might otherwise go.

The Accordeón Table by Marc Sadler, a multiple Compasso d'Oro winner, is the statement piece. It measures 37 x 37 x h. 48 cm, with a base of Ø 16 cm and a pleated diffuser 25 cm high and Ø 37 cm. The base sits comfortably on a 35 cm console, but the diffuser is 2 cm wider than the top itself. Centred, it overhangs by roughly a centimetre at the front and touches or nearly touches the wall at the back. In practice this is fine on a deeper sideboard, and on a 35 cm console it works if you accept a slight overhang or bring the piece forward a little and let the shade float over the front edge. Because the overhang is at shade height, around 23 cm above the top, it does not interfere with objects placed beside the base.
Two practical details make the Accordeón suit a console well. Each lamp is heated and moulded by hand in Lentiflex® and marked "Handmade in Italy", and dual switches control the diffuser and the base light independently. Running only the base glow gives a low evening light for a hallway; switching on the diffuser lights the whole wall. At a net 2.6 kg it is also the most stable lamp here.

Grouping lamps of different heights
A long sideboard often looks better with two or three lights than with one, and Slamp's shapes combine well because they share a translucent, crafted character. The rule that makes a group look intentional is a clear difference in height. Lamps that differ by only a centimetre or two look like a near miss; a step of 10 cm or more reads as a deliberate composition.
Among these four, the heights fall into two bands. The Diamond Table Small (45 cm), the Idea Table (45.5 cm) and the Accordeón Table (48 cm) are close to one another. The Fiorellina Table, at 34 cm, sits a clear 11 to 14 cm lower. A few combinations that work:
- Accordeón with Fiorellina. The tall pleated diffuser at one end and the low floral shape at the other. Place them off centre rather than symmetrically, and keep the middle of the sideboard for a bowl or artwork. Best on a top deeper than 35 cm.
- Diamond with Fiorellina. The narrow faceted column next to the wide, low blossom. Both are Opalflex®, so the light has a similar quality. This pairing suits a 35 cm console, since the Diamond leaves room for the Fiorellina's width elsewhere on the top.
- Idea alone, or with a Diamond. On a very narrow console or a hallway shelf, the flat Idea at the wall end and the Diamond slightly forward create a staggered line of light without using any real depth.
Avoid pairing the Idea with the Diamond side by side at the same distance from the wall: at 45.5 cm and 45 cm they will look like an accidental match. Staggering them front to back, or lifting one on a short stack of books, restores the step.
Choosing for your console
If your console is 35 cm deep or less and sits in a passage, the Idea Table and the Diamond Table Small are the safe choices: both leave generous clear space and neither projects beyond the edge. If the top is a sideboard in a dining or living room, the Fiorellina Table adds a low, decorative note, and the Accordeón Table becomes the anchor of the arrangement, ideally on a surface of 40 cm or more where its diffuser has room. For a group, combine one piece from the 45 to 48 cm band with the 34 cm Fiorellina for a clear change in height.
