AJ Oxford Table Lamp

Designed by Arne Jacobsen for St Catherine's College in Oxford, the AJ Oxford table lamp echoes the college's modernist architecture. Created for the dining hall, it pairs a slim stem and circular base with a graphic, monochrome silhouette that suits many interiors. Available with or without a metal top shade and in two sizes.

St Catherine's College, completed in the early 1960s, was one of Jacobsen's great total works: the Danish architect designed the buildings, gardens, furniture and fittings as a single composition, and the college is now a listed monument of modernist architecture. The Oxford lamp was conceived for its long dining-hall tables, where rows of slender stems carry small discs of light down the hall — architecture in miniature. Louis Poulsen, the Copenhagen lighting house founded in 1874 and Jacobsen's lifelong manufacturing partner, brought the design back into production for the home.

That upright, slender posture is what makes the Oxford so easy to place today. The small footprint leaves a desk or bedside table almost entirely free — a real virtue in the compact apartments common across Asian cities — while the vertical stem adds height and rhythm to low furniture. Choose the version with the metal top shade for focused, glare-free task light over a workspace, or the open version for a softer, candle-like glow on a dining table or windowsill.
