Moon Opal Pendant

Designed in 1960, the Moon is one of Verner Panton's earliest and most iconic lighting designs. Its ten-ring, fan-like structure creates soft, ambient light that changes appearance from every angle. Verner Panton (1926–1998) trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and spent his early career in Arne Jacobsen's studio before striking out on his own in 1955. The Moon belongs to his first wave of independent lighting work, and it already shows the thinking that would define his career: rather than hiding the light source behind a single shade, Panton arranged ten concentric, ring-shaped lamellae so the bulb is never directly visible, yet light escapes softly between every ring. First put into production in 1960, the design helped establish Panton as one of the most original voices in Danish design — a reputation later cemented by the Panthella lamp and the Panton Chair. Today the Moon is produced by VERPAN, the Danish manufacturer dedicated to keeping Panton's designs in authentic production.

The Opal version is the gentlest member of the Moon family. Its translucent white acrylic rings diffuse light twice — once through the material, once between the rings — so the lamp works beautifully as a calm, glare-free centrepiece above a dining table, in a bedroom, or in a reading corner. Because the sculptural form looks different from every angle, it rewards placement where you move around it, such as an open-plan living space or a stairwell. In compact city apartments it is an easy win: the lamp adds strong design character without visual heaviness, and its modest wattage makes it ideal as an atmospheric evening light.
