Patera Pendant

The Patera pendant, designed by Øivind Slaatto in 2015, reimagines the classic chandelier with a Fibonacci-inspired structure for dynamic, glare-free, 360° light. It forms a glowing focal point — striking as a single pendant or in clusters resembling a starry sky.

Øivind Slaatto came to design by an unusual route: trained as a classical pianist, he later studied design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and built a practice around a simple principle — when in doubt, ask nature. The Patera is his signature work, a sphere composed of hundreds of small diamond-shaped cells arranged along a Fibonacci spiral, the same mathematical pattern found in sunflower heads and pine cones. Each cell is angled to shield the bulb from direct view, so the sphere glows evenly without glare. Developed with Louis Poulsen, the Danish lighting house whose century-long pursuit of glare-free light began with Poul Henningsen in the 1920s, the Patera updates the company's founding idea — shaping light itself — for a new generation.

Few pendants are as forgiving to plan around. Because the Patera radiates softly in every direction, it suits open-plan living areas, stair voids and dining spaces alike, and it looks finished from any viewing angle — valuable in compact apartments where a pendant is seen up close and from the side, not just from below. A single sphere over a round table creates an intimate halo; a cluster at staggered heights in a corner or window becomes the starry-sky effect Slaatto intended, replacing the need for a floor lamp altogether.
