Shown in the magazine “Die Form” (issue 23/24, 1930) as an exemplary “good form” for ritual objects, this Jewish Sabbath candlestick was originally made by the L. Wolpert workshop in Frankfurt; the designer is unknown. Its marble base supports a shaft built like the Wagenfeld glass lamp — a nickel-plated tube carrying the candle holder runs within a glass tube, with a removable disc to catch wax drops. TECNOLUMEN still produces it faithfully from the original, in white marble or white onyx.
The SL 30 is one of the most quietly fascinating objects in the TECNOLUMEN catalogue: a piece of ritual silverware rethought in the visual language of the Bauhaus years. Its construction — a metal tube running inside a glass cylinder above a stone base — mirrors almost exactly the logic of Wilhelm Wagenfeld's famous 1924 glass table lamp, which shows how deeply functionalist thinking had spread by 1930, reaching even objects of religious tradition. That a Sabbath candlestick from the Frankfurt workshop of L. Wolpert was held up by “Die Form”, the journal of the Deutscher Werkbund, as a model of good design says much about the era's ambition: every object in daily life, sacred or secular, deserved honest materials and clear construction. TECNOLUMEN of Bremen continues to produce it faithfully from the original — you can explore its other re-editions in the TECNOLUMEN collection.
In the home, the SL 30 lives beautifully even outside its ritual role. The white marble or onyx base and the slender glass-and-nickel shaft make it a serene companion on a dining table, a mantelpiece or a windowsill, where candlelight through the glass tube adds a calm, ceremonial note to an evening. It needs no cable and no socket, which makes it one of the easiest pieces to style in a small apartment — move it wherever the evening gathers. It pairs naturally with the warm metallics and clean lines of other Bauhaus-era pieces, and alongside our decor collection it offers a way to bring designer craftsmanship to the table without adding another electric fixture.
