Spiegel

Designed for Verner Panton's 1969 Der Spiegel installation, the Spiegel lamp is a sculptural statement in brushed aluminium. Its square form with a central dome diffuses soft, ambient, glare-free light — striking solo or in groups on walls or ceilings.

The lamp takes its name from one of the most celebrated interior commissions of the twentieth century: Verner Panton's 1969 design of the Der Spiegel publishing headquarters in Hamburg. Given an entire building to orchestrate, Panton treated light, colour and surface as a single instrument, wrapping rooms in saturated colour schemes and custom-designed fixtures — an approach radically unlike the restrained Danish modernism he had grown up with. The Spiegel lamp was born as part of that total environment, and its geometry shows Panton thinking architecturally: a flat square that sits flush against wall or ceiling, with a brushed-aluminium dome that hides the bulb and pushes a halo of light back across the metal face. In today's interiors the Spiegel is remarkably versatile precisely because it never shows a bare bulb: mount one in a hallway or above a bed for soft ambient light, or compose a grid of several across a larger wall for the full Panton effect — the repeated squares read as a luminous relief sculpture. Since it hugs the surface, it suits low-ceilinged rooms and tight corridors where pendants are impractical, a common reality in compact city apartments.
