Moonsetter

Moonsetter, designed by Anne Boysen, won the Next Danish Design Classic competition in 2020 with a simple, timeless form that combines circle, square and cylinder into one sculptural configuration. Refined with Louis Poulsen and released in 2021 in numbered editions of 100, its 360° rotating disc — with a different finish on each side — lets you play with reflections and the interplay of sculpture and light.

Anne Boysen is a Danish architect and designer whose work moves freely between furniture, lighting and spatial design. With Moonsetter she set out to reduce a lamp to elemental geometry: a circular disc held in a slender rectangular frame above a cylindrical base. The disc is the heart of the design — one side is mirrored, the other matte — and because it rotates a full 360°, the lamp never gives the same light twice. Tilt the mirror toward the hidden LED and light is thrown outward into the room; turn the matte face forward and the glow becomes soft and lunar, true to the lamp's name. The collaboration with Louis Poulsen placed Boysen in a lineage of designers — from Poul Henningsen to Verner Panton — who treated the shaping of light, not the fixture itself, as the real design task.

Moonsetter is a floor-standing sculpture as much as a lamp, and it thrives in places where ambient mood matters more than task light: beside a sofa, in a bedroom corner, or against a wall where the mirrored disc can bounce a soft pool of light across the room.
