Launched in 2010 for the 50th anniversary of Arne Jacobsen's AJ family, the AJ 50 Outdoor Wall Lamp finally brought the most recognisable silhouette in Danish design outside. The angled, asymmetric shade — created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and echoing his Swan and Egg chairs — was re-engineered by Louis Poulsen around a built-in LED behind frosted glass, in weather-sealed die-cast aluminium painted white inside for soft, downward-directed light.
It does its best work beside a front door, along a balcony wall or on a covered terrace, directing light onto steps and thresholds without glare — a pair flanking an entrance gives a calm, symmetrical welcome, and the profile pairs naturally with the indoor AJ family.
