designed by Gyula Pap
Gyula Pap designed the BST 23 in 1923 for Georg Muche's experimental Haus am Horn. TECNOLUMEN's precise reproduction features a mirrored-dome bulb shining onto frosted glass for a floating effect, recreated from Pap's detailed original drawings. Each lamp is sequentially numbered and marked with the TECNOLUMEN / BAUHAUS hallmark.
Gyula Pap (1899–1983) was a Hungarian artist and one of the gifted members of the Bauhaus metal workshop in Weimar. The Haus am Horn, designed by Georg Muche, was the school's experimental show house, built for the great Bauhaus exhibition of 1923 to demonstrate how modern people might live — and Pap's floor lamp was conceived as part of that vision. Its idea remains startlingly pure a century on: a bare, mirror-crowned bulb stands at the top of a slender stem, its light bounced softly downward onto a frosted glass disc so the glow appears to float. TECNOLUMEN, the Bremen manufactory founded in 1980 and guardian of the Bauhaus lighting legacy, reproduces the design faithfully from Pap's original drawings, each example numbered and hallmarked.
In a contemporary home, the BST 23 is the rare floor lamp that adds light without adding visual weight. Its thin vertical line and transparent crown keep sightlines open, so it can stand beside a sofa, in a corner or by a window without crowding the room — a genuine advantage in the compact apartments common across Asian cities. The indirect, mirrored light makes it a natural ambient source for evenings: calm, glare-free and slightly theatrical, like a small monument to modernism in the corner of the living room. It pairs beautifully with both minimalist interiors and collected, eclectic ones. For more ideas, see our guide to designer lighting for small apartments.
