Moon Pendant

Designed in 1960, the Moon is one of Verner Panton's earliest lighting masterpieces. Its fan-like arrangement of ten ring-shaped lamellae gently filters light for a soft, glare-free glow, and its sculptural form shifts with every angle — a showcase of Panton's innovative approach.

When the Moon appeared in 1960, Verner Panton (1926–1998) was still a young designer recently departed from Arne Jacobsen's Copenhagen studio, where he had worked in the early 1950s after training as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Where his Danish contemporaries refined the single-shade pendant, Panton broke the lamp into ten concentric rings, graduated in size and suspended in a fan formation around the bulb. The result is a pendant that shields the light source completely while letting illumination spill out between the rings — an idea both playful and rigorously functional, and an early signal of the experimental career that would later produce the Panthella lamp, the FlowerPot and the Panton Chair. The Moon is produced today by VERPAN, the Danish company devoted to manufacturing Panton's designs true to his originals.

In the home, the Moon behaves like a piece of kinetic sculpture: walk around it and the silhouette changes from a sphere to a layered fan and back again. It is at its best hung where it can be seen from several sides — above a dining table, in a hallway, or in front of a window where daylight catches the rings.
