The AJ Floor Lamp is Arne Jacobsen's definitive reading lamp, designed in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Its asymmetric, tiltable shade directs glare-free light precisely onto the page, while the slim stem and low-profile foot keep the footprint minimal.
Part of Jacobsen's total design for the hotel, the AJ family echoes the leaning profiles of his Swan and Egg chairs and has been manufactured by Louis Poulsen ever since.
Place it beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa; tilt the shade toward the wall for a soft evening glow. The switch sits on the cord. Browse more floor lamps or the full Arne Jacobsen collection.
Light source: E27 (E26 compatible), 1 bulb, max 20 W. IP20, indoor. Bulb not included — we recommend an E27 LED (6–6.5 W, 810 lm).

AJ: Arne Jacobsen's 1957 lamp for the SAS Royal
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamps in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which opened in 1960 and which he designed down to the furniture. A tilting, asymmetric shade on a slim stem sends light down. The family includes table, mini, floor and wall lamps.

- 90°Shade tilts up and down
- 9Colours and finishes
Aimed, glare-free light
The shade tilts about 90° and its white inside softens the light on a book or a desk.
Part of a whole building
Jacobsen drew the AJ with the hotel's Swan and Egg chairs, and the lamps share their leaning lines.
A size for each spot
Floor lamp for a chair, table and mini for desks and bedsides, wall lamp beside the bed.
Colours to choose from
From White and Black to Pale Petroleum, Soft Lemon and Electric Orange, plus polished stainless steel.

A hotel as one design
Jacobsen designed nearly everything in the SAS Royal Hotel himself. The AJ family lit it throughout, and the straight and angled lines of the lamps echo the geometry of his building.

Copper and steel at first
The hotel's original lamps were seen in copper and stainless steel. For the hotel's 60th anniversary in 2020, Louis Poulsen brought back the polished stainless steel versions and the AJ Mini.

The tilting shade
Every AJ shade tilts about 90° up and down, and the wall lamp also turns 60° to each side. Tilt it low to light a book or desk, or turn it up to bounce soft light off a wall or ceiling in the evening.
Materials
Spun steel or stainless steel
The shade is wet-painted spun steel or polished stainless steel, white inside.
Die-cast zinc base
The weighted base on the table and floor lamps keeps the slim stem stable.
Untreated brass details
On brass versions the brass develops a patina over time; dust it with a dry cloth.
Designer and brand
Arne Jacobsen
1902–1971
Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen and graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1927. He worked for the City Architect of Copenhagen, then opened his own office two years later. For the SAS Royal Hotel he designed the building, its Swan and Egg chairs and its lamps.
Using it at home
Can I use smart bulbs?
Yes. The E27 and E14 sockets accept standard LED bulbs, including smart bulbs.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool, then dust the shade and stem with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid solvents on painted finishes.
Which bulb should I use?
One E27 bulb. Around 3000 K suits reading and 2700 K gives a cosier light.
How tall is it?
It is 130 cm tall with a 27.5 cm wide shade, sized for a reading chair.
How is it switched?
It has a switch on its 2.6 m cord, and the shade tilts to aim the light.
