Description

The FJ Elements Table Lamp applies Finn Juhl's sculptural thinking — forms floating free of their frames, as in his celebrated furniture and the UN Trusteeship Council Chamber — to one of his few lighting designs. Sketched in 1963 and relaunched by Louis Poulsen in 2025, its stacked geometric elements include a rotating shade that changes where the light falls, with a diffuser keeping the glow pleasantly glare-free.

On a desk, sideboard or bedside table it earns its place twice over: as warm, controlled light and as a small piece of sculpture — direct the light onto your book, or turn it toward the wall for a soft ambient glow. The two-toned colourways pair naturally with pale woods and muted textiles. See our guide to designer lighting for small apartments or explore more table lamps.

Louis Poulsen

Finn Juhl's 1963 lamp, reissued in 2025

Finn Juhl sketched this lamp in 1963, one of the few lights the Danish architect ever designed. He described it as built from separate elements, and its shades rotate against each other to turn the light. Louis Poulsen reissued it as FJ Elements in 2025.

Turn the light

Rotate the shades to change where the light falls. The lamp's look changes with it.

Soft light, no glare

A diffuser under the shade softens the downward light, and an opening at the top lets a little light rise.

The original grey

Original Grey is the two-toned colourway of Juhl's design, offered beside matt white and black.

One idea, two lamps

Juhl added what he called a linking element to turn the pendant into a table lamp.

Drawn as elements

Drawn as elements

The name comes from Juhl's hand sketches, where he described the lamp as composed of elements. The drawings set out its form, proportions and construction, and even outline a whole series of lamps.

Light you can steer

Light you can steer

The shades are deep-drawn aluminium with a polycarbonate diffuser. Rotate one shade against the other and the light moves across the table or wall, while the opening at the top casts a soft glow upward.

Pendant and table lamp

Pendant and table lamp

The pendant is Ø250 mm and hangs on a 4 m textile cord. The table lamp stands 449 mm high on a die-cast aluminium base, with a 2.8 m textile cord and a switch on the base. Both come in the same three matt colours.

Materials

Deep-drawn aluminium

Shades in matt wet-painted white, black or Original Grey.

Polycarbonate diffuser

Sits inside the shade and keeps the light glare-free.

Die-cast aluminium and steel

Base, stem and lampholder cover of the table lamp, for a stable stand.

Designer and brand

Finn Juhl

1912–1989

Juhl wanted to study art history, but his father pushed him towards architecture. He became known for the Pelican Chair (1940), the Poet Sofa (1941) and the Chieftain Chair (1949). His Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN in New York helped bring Danish Modern to America.

Using it at home

How do I change the light direction?

Let the lamp cool, then turn the shades against each other by hand until the light falls where you want it.

How do I clean it?

Dust the matt painted shades with a soft, dry cloth. A slightly damp cloth removes marks; dry it afterwards.

Which bulb does it take?

One E14 bulb of up to 15 W.

What cord comes with it?

A 2.8 m textile cord matching the finish, with a switch on the base.

How big is it?

It is 449 mm tall and 175 by 200 mm across, and weighs 3.5 kg.
