Verner Panton designed the Panthella for Louis Poulsen in 1971: a hemispherical opal shade above a trumpet-shaped stem that works as a second reflector, so the light spreads softly and the bulb stays out of sight.
The Ø 500 is the original size of the Panthella Floor Lamp. It stands 129 cm tall and suits the end of a sofa or a larger room where it is seen from across the space.
It switches on and off with a floor switch on the cord. See more floor lamps or the Verner Panton collection.

Panton's 1971 lamp where the base is a reflector
Verner Panton launched the Panthella with Louis Poulsen in 1971. The hemispherical shade sends light down onto a trumpet-shaped base, which reflects it back into the room, so you see the glow and not the bulb. The family now runs from a 16 cm portable to a 50 cm floor lamp.
- 1971Year the Panthella was launched
- 160–500Shade diameters in mm across the family
- 2020Year the cordless Panthella Portable arrived
- 2Reflectors: the shade and the trumpet base
Soft light, hidden bulb
Shade and base work together, so the light reaches the room only after it has been reflected.
Sizes for every surface
Portables at 16 and 25 cm, table lamps at 25, 32 and 40 cm, and floor lamps for reading corners and living rooms.
Corded or cordless
The portables run on a built-in battery with step dimming, so they move from shelf to terrace table.
Panton's love of colour
Opal white sits next to coloured opal, opaque and chrome versions, a nod to the designer's love of colour.

A light sculpture
When it appeared, the Panthella's curved form was new because both the stand and the shade worked as reflectors. Light falls from the shade onto the trumpet base and spreads around the lamp as a diffuse glow.

Years of experiments
Louis Poulsen began working with Panton in the 1960s. The Panthella took several years of trials with materials, reflection and colour. Chrome was a bold choice then and mattered a great deal to Panton.

From portable to floor
The 160 and 250 Portables suit bedside tables and dinners outside. The 320 and 400 table lamps sit on sideboards and consoles. The floor lamp lights a reading chair or the corner of a living room.
Materials
Opal acrylic shade
Glows across its whole surface while sending most of the light downward.
Moulded polymer base
The trumpet form is the second reflector, so keep it dust-free for the best light.
Integrated LED or socket
Portables use a built-in LED; the 320 takes an E14 bulb, and the 400 and floor lamps take E27.
