The PH 2/1 Portable Lamp packs a century of lighting science into a cordless format. Its mouth-blown, three-layered white opal glass shades follow the three-shade system Poul Henningsen created in 1925–26 — the geometry that won gold at the 1925 Paris Exposition — so the bulb is never visible, only soft, layered light. Louis Poulsen pairs the smallest 2/1 shade set with a built-in dim-to-warm LED and a chrome-plated or brass metallised stem.
Free of any cord, this portable lamp follows the evening: dinner table tonight, bedside later, balcony at the weekend thanks to its IP44 rating. Discover more portable lamps or the full Louis Poulsen range.

Louis Poulsen
Henningsen's smallest three-shade lamp in opal glass
The PH 2/1 is the smallest member of Poul Henningsen's three-shade system, which he set out with Louis Poulsen in 1925–26. A 20 cm top shade sits over the smallest lower shades in mouth-blown opal glass. It comes as a pendant, a table lamp, a wall lamp and a cordless portable.

Small but glare-free
The shades are calculated so you see glowing glass and never the bulb.
Glass blown by hand
Each shade is blown by hand, so slight variations in thickness and texture are normal.
A format for every spot
Hang it, stand it, fix it to the wall or carry the cordless version from room to room.
Warm when dimmed
The portable dims to a warmer colour, from 2700 K down to 1800 K.

The three-shade system
Henningsen placed every shade on a logarithmic spiral, so light is caught and reflected before it reaches the room. The system grew into a family of hundreds of lamps, and the 2/1 is its most compact form.

Glass that spreads light
The opal glass is glossy outside and sandblasted underneath. That keeps the light even and soft, while the whole lamp glows gently when switched on. Because each shade is blown by hand, no two are quite the same.

Small rooms and corners
The PH 2/1 suits a bedside table, a desk, a window sill or a narrow hallway. Its 20 cm shade gives a pool of soft light without filling the space. The portable goes wherever you need it, with no cord to plan around.
Materials
Mouth-blown opal glass
Three layers, sandblasted underneath; wipe it with a damp cloth when cool.
Metal stem and fittings
In chrome, brass or black finishes depending on the version; dust with a dry cloth.
Rechargeable battery
In the portable, it gives about 5 hours at full light and charges by cable.
Designer and brand
Poul Henningsen
1894–1967
Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
Using it at home
Where does it work best?
On a bedside table, a desk or a sideboard, or as a small pendant over a kitchen counter or in a hallway.
How long does the portable last?
About 5 hours at full brightness and up to 120 hours at the lowest step.
Can I dim it?
The portable dims steplessly and in four steps. Corded versions dim with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
Why does my glass look slightly different?
Each shade is mouth-blown, so small variations in thickness and texture are part of the craft.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool, then wipe the glass with a soft, lightly damp cloth and dry it.
