The PH 3/2 Table gives soft, harmonious light through mouth-blown three-layer white opal glass that directs light mainly downward. Poul Henningsen based it on the three-shade system he created in 1925; the first lamp in that system — the "Paris Lamp", made with Louis Poulsen — won gold at the 1925 exhibition. Built on the logarithmic spiral for even, glare-free light, the PH 3/2 pairs a ~30 cm top shade with the 2/2 lower shades.
Henningsen called bad lighting "the dark side of electricity" and devoted his career to fixing it. His insight was geometric: by deriving shade curves from the logarithmic spiral and stacking three of them in calculated positions, light from a single bulb could be redirected so that none of it reaches the eye directly. The white opal-glass table version distils that idea into its most domestic form — an island of light, as he described it, that makes the area around the lamp feel inviting while the glass itself glows softly across the room. The design has remained in continuous production at Louis Poulsen, essentially unchanged, since the late 1920s.
Few table lamps are as easy to live with. The classic white opal version is the most neutral of the PH 3/2 family, equally at home beside Scandinavian oak, dark walnut or a minimalist sofa. Use it as a bedside lamp where the downward light is kind for reading, or on a console near the entrance so you come home to a warm glow rather than an overhead blast — a small luxury that transforms compact apartments. Henningsen's hybrid made to hang low over a table
The PH 3/2 combines a top shade of about 30 cm with the lower shades of the smaller 2/2 model. Poul Henningsen made these hybrid sizes so his lamps could hang lower, over a table or desk. The shades are mouth-blown opal glass, shaped on his 1926 logarithmic spiral.

Made to hang low
The smaller lower shades keep the light glare-free even close to the table.
Even, soft light
Every shade sits on a logarithmic spiral, which spreads light evenly and softens shadows.
Pendant, table or wall
The same shade set comes as pendants, table lamps and a wall lamp.
Glass or coloured glass
White opal is the classic; pale rose and amber editions add warmth.

Reading the numbers
Henningsen's names describe the shades. In the PH 3/2, the 3 means a top shade of about 30 cm, and the 2 means it uses the lower shades of the 2/2 model. The mix lets the lamp hang lower without glare.

From metal to glass
Early PH shades were metal with painted undersides in white, gold or silver. Glass came later. Today each shade is mouth-blown, so its thickness and texture vary slightly from lamp to lamp.

Where it fits
Hang the pendant over a dining table or kitchen island. Put the table lamp on a sideboard or desk. The wall lamp brings the same light to places with no ceiling outlet. Pale rose, amber and aged brass versions add warmth.
Materials
Mouth-blown opal glass
Glossy outside and sandblasted underneath for even light; wipe with a damp cloth.
Coloured glass editions
Pale rose and amber shades are blown in four layers with white sandblasted undersides.
Brass or chrome fittings
Untreated brass darkens with time; lacquered and chrome finishes keep their look.

Poul Henningsen
1894–1967
Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
Using it at home
Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
Will brass versions change?
Untreated brass slowly develops a patina. Aged brass that is lacquered keeps its finish.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool. Wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth and dust the metal with a dry cloth.
How tall is it?
Between 455 and 472 mm depending on the version, with a 285 mm shade.
How is it switched?
The Pale Rose and Aged Brass Opal versions have a through-switch on the cord.
