The PH 3/3 Aged Brass Opal Pendant is the pure expression of Poul Henningsen's original 1926 idea: top, middle and lower shades in the exact 3:2:1 ratio, each curve a section of the logarithmic spiral he used to civilise electric light. This Louis Poulsen edition pairs three-layer white opal glass — sandblasted undersides spreading a soft, even glow — with an aged brass top shade, suspension and canopy, lacquered to preserve the finish.
The warm brass suits interiors of oak, walnut, linen and leather where polished chrome would feel cold: hang it over a round dining table, in a stairwell, or low in a bedroom corner as Scandinavians do — its modest 30 cm top shade never crowds a compact room. Louis Poulsen
Henningsen's 1926 three-shade idea in brass and glass
In 1926 Poul Henningsen set out his three-shade system, with each curve based on the logarithmic spiral. The PH 3/3 is that system in its original form. Here the top shade is aged brass, and the middle and lower shades are mouth-blown opal glass.

Glare-free light
The three shades are shaped so you never look straight into the bulb. The light falls down and out in an even glow.
Warm brass finish
The aged brass top shade, suspension and canopy are lacquered to keep the finish. It suits oak, walnut, linen and leather.
Compact size
At 28.5 cm across, it fits small dining tables, stairwells and bedroom corners.

How three shades work
Each shade catches light from the bulb and reflects it before it reaches the room. The opal glass also lets light pass through, so the lamp glows from within. The result is soft light with no harsh shadows.

In the home
Hang it over a round dining table, in a stairwell or low in a bedroom corner. Its modest size never crowds a compact room.

Lit and unlit
Switched off, the brass and white glass read as a quiet object. Switched on, the glass shades glow and the brass warms the light.

1894–1967
Henningsen began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted his life. His PH lamp won gold at the 1925 Paris Exposition. The three-shade system he developed in 1926 is the base of the whole PH collection.
Using it at home
Which bulb should I use?
One E27 bulb of up to 70 W. A warm white LED of 2700 K matches the brass finish.
How high should I hang it?
Around 60–70 cm above a dining table. In a stairwell or corner, hang it so the shades sit just above eye level.
Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
How do I clean it?
Let the lamp cool. Wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth and dust the lacquered brass with a dry cloth.
