Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 around a practical problem: bulbs kept changing shape and size, and every change brought a fresh risk of glare. His answer was a three-shade pyramid that lights itself and throws light both downward and sideways, so the lamp gives an even, glare-free light with any bulb placed inside it. Early versions carried red and blue tinted inner shades to correct the colour of the light, and as light sources improved these were left out. This is the compact Ø320 version, with translucent opal shades and white inner surfaces in four colourways: opal beige, opal white, opal pale rose and opal pale blue.
At 320 mm across, 173 mm tall and 1.8 kg, it is the size for smaller rooms: over a two-seat dining table, above a kitchen counter, or beside a bed. The opal shades are translucent, so the body of the lamp glows quietly along with the light it casts down and out. It hangs on a 3 m cord.

Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958, when light bulbs kept changing shape and size. He shaped its shades so the lamp gives soft, glare-free light whatever bulb sits inside. The family now runs from the 50 cm original to the 30 cm Mini and the 32 cm Opal.

Made for the dining table
The shades send light down onto the table and softly out into the room. You never look straight into the bulb.

Built on the spiral
Henningsen based the shade curves on the logarithmic spiral. Each shade catches light and reflects it before it leaves the lamp. The light on the table is soft, with no bright spot to squint at.
A shape for changing bulbs
Henningsen made the PH 5 because new bulbs kept arriving in new shapes, each bringing fresh glare. His shades hide the bulb from normal viewing angles, so the lamp still works with the LED bulbs of today.
Choosing the size
The 50 cm PH 5 fits most dining tables and kitchen islands. The Mini at 30 cm and the Opal at 32 cm are right for small tables, kitchens and bedrooms, or hung in a row over a long counter.

Poul Henningsen
1894–1967
Henningsen began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted his life. His PH lamp won gold at the 1925 Paris Exposition. In 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system that the PH 5 builds on, and he designed the PH 5 itself in 1958.
