Description

The PH Hat, designed in 1961, belongs to Poul Henningsen's late period, when four decades of work with Louis Poulsen had distilled his ideas into ever simpler forms. A single brim-like shade in white lacquered steel — named for its profile — tilts from 0° to about 67° and emits entirely indirect, glare-free light, while the rose-painted interior, a signature Henningsen device, warms the reflected glow to flatter skin tones.

Created with bedrooms in mind, it solves a familiar problem in smaller rooms: mounted at seated eye level on each side of the bed, it frees the nightstands entirely and gives symmetrical, glare-free reading light. Its discreet profile also suits hallways, entrances and staircases. Explore the Louis Poulsen collection or more wall lamps.

PH Hat: Henningsen's 1961 tilting wall lamp

Poul Henningsen designed the PH Hat in 1961, among other things as a bedroom lamp. A single brim-like shade in white steel tilts from 0° to about 67° and gives indirect, glare-free light. The rose-painted inside warms the light it reflects.

Fully indirect light

The bulb hides under the brim, so you only see light reflected off the shade.

A warm rose glow

The rose-coloured inner shade gives the light a warm tone.

Adjust the spread

The light output changes with the angle; tilt it from 0° to about 67°.

Corded or hardwired

Choose a plug-in version or one wired into the wall.

A late Henningsen design

A late Henningsen design

The PH Hat came near the end of Henningsen's four decades with Louis Poulsen, when his ideas had become simpler in form. It was first made in two sizes; only the smaller one is produced today.

Named for its brim

Named for its brim

One spun steel shade curves over the bulb like the brim of a hat. Painted rose inside and white outside, it turns a small bulb into soft, coloured light, and the output changes with the angle you choose.

Bedroom, hall, stairs

Bedroom, hall, stairs

Henningsen meant it as a bedroom lamp, among other uses, and it suits foyers, stairways and passageways too. Mounted in pairs, it frames a bed without taking space on the bedside tables.

Materials

Spun steel

Shade and wall box are spun steel; dust them with a soft, dry cloth.

Rose-painted interior

The wet-painted inner shade sets the warm tone of the light.

Plastic cord

The corded version has a 2.4 m white cord with plug and a switch on the wall box.

Designer and brand

Poul Henningsen

1894–1967

Henningsen was born in Copenhagen and studied at technical schools in Frederiksberg and Copenhagen, though he never graduated as an architect. He began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted his life. In 1926 he set out the three-shade system his lamps still follow.

Using it at home

Which bulb should I use?

One E14 bulb of up to 20 W. A warm white E14 LED keeps the rose tone soft.

Where is the switch?

On the wall box. Hardwired versions come with or without a switch, or run from the main switch.

How high should I mount it?

Beside a bed, place it at a height where the brim hides the bulb from your eyes when sitting up.

Does it need an electrician?

The corded version plugs in. The hardwired version should be installed by an electrician.

How do I clean it?

Let it cool, then dust the shade inside and out with a soft, dry cloth.
