Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen around 1941 for Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen, the VL 45 Radiohus Pendant is a landmark of Danish functionalism. Its shade is mouth-blown in three layers of glass — glossy on the outside, softly glowing when lit — and hangs from a brushed brass fitting that Louis Poulsen leaves untreated, so it develops a natural patina over the years.
The even, warm glow makes this pendant lamp a flattering choice over a dining table or kitchen counter: the Ø 175 suits bedsides and rows over a counter, while the Ø 250 carries a small dining table on its own. See more pendant lamps or the full Louis Poulsen collection.

Louis Poulsen
Lauritzen's 1940s lamp for Danish radio's house
Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL 45 in the 1940s for Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen. First known as the Office Lamp, it pairs mouth-blown opal glass with brass. Louis Poulsen makes it as a pendant in two sizes and as a cordless portable.
- 1936–41Years Radiohuset was built
- 3Layers of mouth-blown glass in the pendant shade
- Ø 175mm, the portable and small pendant
- Ø 250mm, the large pendant
Glass that glows
The layered opal glass is glossy outside and spreads a soft, even light when lit.
Brass that ages
The pendant's brushed brass is left untreated, so it gains a natural patina over the years.
A portable version
The cordless VL 45 has an aged brass frame and a leather strap, and works indoors and out.
A design with a past
Photos from the 1950s show the VL 45 above the Eames Lounge Chair in the Eameses' Los Angeles home.

Made for one building
Lauritzen designed Radiohuset as a total work of art, from its studios down to the lamps. The VL 45 began there as a working light for offices, which is why it was first called the Office Lamp.

Glass and brass
The shade is mouth-blown, so each one varies slightly. On the pendant, the brass fitting is untreated and darkens with time. On the portable, the brass is aged and lacquered to keep its finish.

Where it works
The Ø 175 pendant suits a hallway, a kitchen counter or a row over a table. The Ø 250 lights a dining table. The portable moves from bedside to terrace with no cord to plan around.
Materials
Mouth-blown opal glass
Gives the soft glow; wipe it with a damp cloth when the lamp is cool.
Untreated brass
On the pendant, it develops a patina; dust it with a dry cloth and avoid polish if you like the aged look.
Leather strap
On the portable, the strap makes the lamp easy to carry and hang.

Using it at home
Which size suits a dining table?
The Ø 250 pendant suits most dining tables. Two or three Ø 175 pendants in a row work over a long table or kitchen island.
How do I clean the glass?
Let it cool, then wipe it with a soft, lightly damp cloth and dry it.
Will the brass change colour?
Yes. The brushed brass fitting is untreated and slowly darkens to a patina.
Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
What comes with it?
A canopy and a 4.4 m white fabric cord.
