The Toldbod name comes from Toldboden, the old customs quay on Copenhagen's harbour where Louis Poulsen was headquartered for decades — the same waterfront whose street lighting the company has supplied since the early twentieth century. Created by Louis Poulsen's in-house design team, the Toldbod 155 Wall borrows its optics from Poul Henningsen's PH Ellipse: the bulb is recessed deep within the spun shade so that the fixture throws a precise, downward wash of light with no direct glare to the eye. That discipline — design to shape light, never to decorate for its own sake — has guided the company since Henningsen began his collaboration in the 1920s, and it gives the 155 Wall its quietly architectural character.
