Toldbod Pendant

The Toldbod family, developed by the Louis Poulsen design team, is based on Poul Henningsen's PH Ellipse reflector. The Toldbod 290 outdoor pendant debuted in 1982, followed by Toldbod Glass indoor pendants and, in 2019, metal versions and larger editions. True to PH's glare-free philosophy, it directs light downward, and its matte white-painted interior spreads light evenly — equally good alone or in clusters.

The series takes its name from the historic Toldbod quarter on Copenhagen's harbourfront, where Louis Poulsen was based for many years — a quiet tribute to the company's own roots. Founded in 1874, Louis Poulsen has spent well over a century refining a single idea: design to shape light. The metal Toldbod pendant is one of the purest expressions of that heritage. Its spun-metal shade traces the elliptical curve Poul Henningsen developed in his studies of glare-free illumination, so the bulb stays hidden from view at normal sitting and standing angles while a soft, even cone of light falls exactly where it is needed.
