The Enigma Pendant, introduced by Louis Poulsen in 2003, is Shoichi Uchiyama's chandelier reduced to its essence: concentric acrylic shades that appear to hover in mid-air on wires so fine they nearly disappear, so light itself becomes the visible structure. Each shade is positioned to soften glare and guide the glow downward — Japanese elegance meeting Scandinavian light-shaping, with a matt black version added in 2018.
Because the Enigma occupies so little visual space, it rewards rooms where a conventional chandelier would overwhelm: over a dining table in an open-plan home, above a stairwell, or hung slightly low so the layered shades read at eye level.
