MSCL 1 + 2 CUBELIGHT Table Lamp

Mathias Schifferdecker's CUBELIGHT MSCL 1 + 2, introduced in 2012 by TECNOLUMEN, is a modular lamp inspired by Bauhaus architecture. Eighteen polished glass cubes arrange freely on a stainless-steel housing with integrated LEDs, shifting from soft ambient glow to artistic statement. Each lamp is consecutively numbered.

TECNOLUMEN of Bremen is best known for its faithful re-editions of Bauhaus classics such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld's WG 24, but the company also commissions contemporary designs that carry the same ideas forward. The CUBELIGHT is exactly that: Mathias Schifferdecker took the Bauhaus fascination with elementary geometry — the cube, the grid, the module — and turned it into a lamp the owner completes. Eighteen solid glass cubes rest on a brushed stainless-steel base concealing the LEDs, and because the cubes simply stack rather than fasten, every arrangement is temporary and every owner's lamp is different. Light travels up through the stacked glass, refracting at each joint, so the structure reads as a small illuminated city. In keeping with TECNOLUMEN tradition, each example is consecutively numbered.

As a table lamp, the CUBELIGHT works best where its glow can be enjoyed at close range: a sideboard, a console in the hallway, a bookshelf or a desk that needs atmosphere rather than task light. Rearranging the cubes takes seconds, which makes it a rare design object that invites interaction — a conversation piece in the most literal sense.
