NJP Floor Lamp

The NJP series, designed by Oki Sato of nendo, reinterprets the classic anglepoise lamp for modern work. The NJP Floor has a flexible head and arms for exceptional adjustability — perfect for reading beside an armchair — with the LED positioned high to avoid glare. A chimney-shaped head reflects light through the rear, illuminating the arm while letting heat escape.

Oki Sato founded the Tokyo design studio nendo in 2002 and has become one of the most prolific designers of his generation, known for work that hides a small, clever twist inside an apparently simple object. For Louis Poulsen he turned to the architect lamp — a typology defined by Scandinavian and British studios in the 1930s — and asked what it should become in the LED era. The answer, launched in 2015 as the NJP series, keeps the honest, exposed mechanics of the original: visible springs, articulated joints, a head that goes where you point it. But the chimney-shaped head is pure nendo — it vents heat from the LED while bouncing a portion of light backwards down the arm, so the lamp gently illuminates itself, a wink at the classic it reinterprets.

The floor version frees the design from the desk. Stationed beside an armchair or sofa it is a superb reading light — the head pivots precisely to your page, while the high-mounted LED keeps glare out of your eyes. It is equally useful in a bedroom, reaching over the headboard where a table lamp would crowd the nightstand.
