Patera Oval Pendant

The Patera Oval, designed by Øivind Slaatto with Louis Poulsen in 2015, is part of the Patera family. This modern chandelier is built on a Fibonacci sequence for 360°, glare-free light, its intricate structure emitting soft, flattering illumination from every angle. Inspired by ellipsoids and ideal for lower ceilings, it pairs a round opening for direct light with a smooth transition to reflected light.

Øivind Slaatto is one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary Danish design — a trained classical pianist who studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Design and brings a musician's feel for rhythm and pattern to his work. His guiding method is to borrow solutions from nature, and the Patera family is his most celebrated result: hundreds of small diamond-shaped cells arranged along a Fibonacci spiral, each angled to catch light and shield glare. The collaboration with Louis Poulsen — the Danish lighting house that has refined the art of glare-free illumination since its work with Poul Henningsen began in the 1920s — places the Patera in a direct line of descent from the company's founding philosophy: design to shape light, not to decorate.

The Oval variant flattens the sphere into an ellipsoid, which makes it the Patera of choice for rooms where ceiling height is at a premium — a common condition in modern city apartments. Hung over a dining table, it reads as a glowing centrepiece rather than a hanging obstacle, and because the light is diffused in all directions it flatters both the food and the faces around the table.
