The PH 3/2 table lamp, designed by Poul Henningsen with Louis Poulsen, belongs to the PH system developed in 1926. This "hybrid" model pairs a 30 cm top shade with smaller lower shades for optimal distribution and a warm, inviting glow — a focused island of light for tables, dressers or windowsills. The aged-brass and opal-glass finish adds timeless character.
Henningsen was as much a critic and scientist as a designer: he spent the early 1920s analysing how electric light could be shaped to flatter rooms and faces rather than glare at them. The result, unveiled after his gold-medal success at the 1925 Paris exposition, was the three-shade system — shade curves based on the logarithmic spiral, each shade catching and redirecting light the previous one missed. The three-layer opal glass of this version glows gently across its whole surface while sending most of the light downward onto the table. The aged-brass stem and base are untreated, so the metal slowly deepens in tone over the years — a living finish that makes each lamp gradually more personal.
