The PH 4½-4 Pendant, introduced in 1980, is a specialist within Poul Henningsen's three-shade family: a 45 cm top shade over a deeper set of lower shades, conceived for fixtures that hang low over a surface. Like every lamp in the system Henningsen developed with Louis Poulsen in 1925–26, its curves are derived from the logarithmic spiral, so light is caught at a uniform angle and the bulb stays hidden even when the pendant sits close to eye level. The shades are mouth-blown, three-layer opal glass — white inside, glossy outside, gently luminous throughout.
