Enigma Pendant

Designed by Shoichi Uchiyama, the Enigma series reinterprets the chandelier with floating, transparent forms. The Enigma 425, 545 and 825 suspend delicate concentric shades on ultra-thin wires for a light, airy expression that blends Japanese elegance with Scandinavian simplicity. A sleek black version was added in 2018.

Louis Poulsen introduced the Enigma in 2003, the fruit of the Danish manufacturer's long dialogue with Japanese design culture. Shoichi Uchiyama's idea was a chandelier reduced to its essence: shades that appear to hover in mid-air, held by wires so fine they nearly disappear, so that light itself becomes the visible structure. The design follows Louis Poulsen's philosophy of shaping light rather than fixtures — each shade is positioned to soften glare and guide the glow downward, producing comfortable illumination with an almost weightless presence. It is this quiet engineering beneath the poetry that has kept the Enigma in production for more than two decades, alongside the company's other icons in our Louis Poulsen collection.

Because the Enigma takes up so little visual space, it is especially rewarding in rooms where a conventional chandelier would overwhelm — over a dining table in an open-plan apartment, above a stairwell, or in a bedroom where you want atmosphere without bulk. In dense city homes across Asia and beyond, where ceiling height and floor area are precious, its transparent layers add depth and ceremony without crowding the room.
