designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen
The VL Studio Wall lamp, designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen for Radiohuset in the 1940s and reintroduced in 2022, keeps its functionalist character with minor updates. Lightly brushed polished brass and triple-layer, mouth-blown opal glass create a warm, diffused light; also available in matte black for a more modern look — elegant, ambient and timeless.
Vilhelm Lauritzen was one of the defining figures of Danish functionalism, an architect who believed that good design should serve everyday life without unnecessary ornament. His most celebrated building, Radiohuset — the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen — was conceived as a total work of architecture, in which furniture, fittings and lighting were all drawn by the architect's own studio. The lamps Lauritzen created for the project, produced in collaboration with Louis Poulsen, have since become classics in their own right. The VL Studio line revives this heritage faithfully: the rounded opal glass diffuser and slim brass mount follow the spirit of the original drawings closely, while modern production methods ensure consistent quality. Like other reissues from Louis Poulsen, it is less a retro object than a piece of living design history, made to be used daily for decades.
The quality of light is what sets the VL Studio Wall apart. Three layers of mouth-blown opal glass soften the glare of the bulb completely, so the entire diffuser glows evenly like a small moon against the wall. The brushed brass back-plate develops a subtle warmth of its own as it reflects the light, and because the lamp projects only modestly from the wall, it never feels bulky — a quiet presence by day and a gentle source of ambience by night.
Wall lamps are one of the most underused tools in compact homes, and the VL Studio Wall is a perfect example of why they deserve more attention. In a small city apartment, mounting light on the wall frees up bedside tables and floor space while adding a layer of soft, indirect illumination that overhead lighting cannot match. Place a pair on either side of the bed as reading lights, flank a hallway mirror, or use one to warm up a dim corner of the living room. It pairs naturally with other Louis Poulsen classics, and works beautifully alongside a sculptural ceiling fixture from our pendant lamp collection.
