Christmas Tales is a series of small ceramic Christmas figures that Thora Finnsdottir made for Kähler. White-glazed figurines hug, kiss, travel and rest among pine cones, logs and mushrooms that are cast from real ones, so every piece tells a short story set in the Nordic winter forest.

A story in every piece
Each figure carries a Christmas message, like the two friends in Christmas Hug.
Cast from nature
Cones, logs and mushrooms are cast directly from real ones from the forest floor.
Made and decorated by hand
Artisanal processes give each figure its own structure and expression.

Like a Christmas card, a figure reminds someone to pause and enjoy the season.
Inspired by old legends
The figurines draw on old legends and Nordic nature. Finnsdottir chose small, warm scenes such as a hug, a kiss, a journey, a break and the advent wait, each set in a winter forest setting.
White figures, natural glazes
The figures themselves are glazed white, while the setting around them uses coloured glazes in natural Nordic shades. The contrast makes the little characters stand out against the cast cones and stumps.
Light, ornaments and advent
Some pieces hold a candle, like Christmas Kiss, and others hang, like the wreath and swinging girl ornaments. Together they build a winter scene on a windowsill or the Christmas table.

Thora Finnsdottir
Thora Finnsdottir graduated from the Danish Design School in 2009 and works in her studio at Kunstnerhuset in Frederiksværk. Her Icelandic background shows in the contrasts she explores between nature and civilisation, old and new. She also designed Kähler's Kantarel series.

How do I clean the figures?
Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. They are not for the dishwasher or the microwave.
Is it an annual edition?
No. Christmas Tales is a set of scenes rather than a dated yearly piece, so figures from different seasons sit together.
Which pieces hold candles?
Christmas Kiss is a candle holder. Never leave a lit candle unattended and keep it away from flammable decorations.
Can the ornaments hang on the tree?
Yes. The wreath and swinging girl ornaments are made to hang on a branch or in a window.
Why does each figure look slightly different?
They are made and decorated by hand, so structure and glaze vary from piece to piece.
