designed by Finn Juhl
The FJ Elements is one of Finn Juhl's few lighting designs — originally created in 1963 and relaunched in 2025, including the iconic two-toned grey version. Its name comes from Juhl's hand sketches documenting the lamp's “elemental” construction and modular concept. Beneath the simple geometric lines, a rotating upper shade lets you redirect the light and subtly transform the lamp's expression.
Finn Juhl (1912–1989) is celebrated as one of the fathers of Danish Modern — the architect whose sculptural furniture and celebrated interior for the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations in New York helped introduce Danish design to the world. Lighting was a rarity in his portfolio, which makes the FJ Elements all the more special: sketched in 1963, it distils his love of floating, separated forms into a pendant whose shades seem to rest lightly on one another. Louis Poulsen's 2025 relaunch brings the design into serial production with the colour sensitivity Juhl was famous for, joining the manufacturer's family of Danish classics in our Louis Poulsen collection.
As a pendant, the FJ Elements is at its best where you linger: over a dining table, a kitchen island or a reading corner. The rotating upper shade is genuinely useful in small homes — angle it to wash light across a wall and the room feels larger; turn it down for intimate dinners. Its moderate scale suits the ceiling heights of modern city apartments, and the two-toned versions add a quiet splash of colour that anchors a neutral interior. If you are weighing it against other Danish classics, our PH 5 buying guide is a helpful companion, and you can browse all pendant lamps for the full picture.
