The Smartbag is a lightweight shopping bag in the Unikko pattern that folds away into its own inside pocket when not in use. Maija Isola created Unikko in 1964, at a time when Marimekko's collections included hardly any florals. Her abstract flower has since become an icon of print design and a symbol of joy and creativity.
Made in China from 100% recycled polyester, it measures 35 x 40 cm and weighs just 0.06 kg. Colour: White / Black.
Keep it in your handbag for unplanned shopping, and discover more prints in our Marimekko collection.

The Smartbag: a 35 x 40 cm shopper that folds into itself
The Smartbag is a light shopping bag in recycled polyester that folds into its own inside pocket, small enough for a coat pocket. It comes in Maija Isola's 1964 Unikko poppy, a smaller-scale Mini Unikko and Marilogo, a pattern built from the Marimekko wordmark.

The flower Ratia didn't want
Marimekko founder Armi Ratia had ruled out florals, believing real flowers could not be captured in print. In 1964 Maija Isola answered with a whole collection of bold, abstract flowers. Unikko was one of them, and Ratia took to it at once.

Folds into itself
The bag tucks away into its own inside pocket, turning a 35 x 40 cm shopper into a small, flat pouch. At around 60 to 70 g, it adds almost nothing to what you carry, so it can live in your bag or coat all year.

For every errand
Keep it for groceries, market trips and the books you did not plan to buy. Unikko and Mini Unikko bring colour, while Marilogo repeats the Marimekko wordmark in black and white for a quieter look.

Designer and brand
Maija Isola
1927–2001
Maija Isola joined Armi Ratia's company in 1949, before it was even called Marimekko, and designed for it until 1987. In that time she drew more than 500 prints. She painted Unikko in 1964 in defiance of Ratia's rule against florals, and Ratia ended up picking it for the collection.
