Ripls is a flat, round lamp for the wall or the ceiling, designed by Jakob Wagner for Louis Poulsen. A clear front with concentric ripples sits over an opal diffuser, so the integrated LED reads as one even disc of light with a fine pattern around the edge.
It comes in two diameters. The Ø 310 (20 W, about 1,670 lumen) suits hallways, bathrooms and small rooms; the Ø 500 (33 W) lights a living room, a kitchen or a stairwell from one point. Each size is made in 2700 K, 3000 K and 4000 K, and with either Bluetooth wireless control or DALI for building control systems.

Jakob Wagner's 2017 disc of rippled light
Jakob Wagner designed Ripls for Louis Poulsen in 2017. From a distance it reads as a plain opal disc. Walk past and concentric ripples in the clear front catch and bend the light, like rings spreading on a still forest lake after a stone drops in.

Quiet from afar
It is minimal enough that many can share one room without drawing attention.
Alive up close
The ripples refract the light and change as you move, yet the outer surface is smooth: the ripples sit inside.
A soft halo
Perforations in the slim housing let indirect light glow around the edge, so the disc seems to float.
Wall or ceiling
Suited to corridors, stairwells, entrances and small offices or meeting rooms.
Ripples in a still lake
Wagner wanted a lamp that is discreet yet still an experience. The concave clear front carries ripples like rings in water, and they change in appearance with the angle you see them from.
Depth in a slim disc
The concave form makes the light strongest at the centre, fading toward the edges. An opal diffuser sits deep inside, which gives the front a sense of depth while the housing stays just 91 mm deep.
Two sizes
The Ø310 uses 20 W and gives about 1,670 lumens, right for hallways and small rooms. The Ø500 uses 33 W and gives about 3,100 lumens for larger rooms and higher ceilings. Both are 91 mm deep.
Materials
Clear polycarbonate front
UV resistant, with the ripples inside and a smooth outer surface that is easy to wipe.
Opalescent PMMA diffuser
Spreads the integrated LED light into an even glow.

Born in Copenhagen in 1963, Wagner studied design engineering in Denmark and product design at Art Center in Switzerland. He founded Jakob Wagner Studio in Copenhagen in 1993 and has designed for Alessi, Bang & Olufsen, Menu, Muuto and Stelton.
Using it at home
Wall or ceiling?
Both. It is hardwired, so an electrician mounts and connects it.
What light source does it use?
An integrated LED, 3000 K as standard with Ra 90. Versions at 2700 K and 4000 K are also made.
Can I dim it?
Versions with DALI or wireless Bluetooth control can be dimmed through that system. Check the control type of your version.
Can it go in a bathroom?
It is rated IP20, so use it in dry indoor spaces such as corridors, stairwells, entrances and living rooms.
How do I clean it?
Switch it off, then wipe the smooth front with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on the polycarbonate.
